I found the old road that was in the 1938 air photo the ruts arr visible in the woods going at the exact angle but lots of targets started coming out . I dug the nails thinking maybe a coin may be masked. but none yet I will keep working it I have about 20 achers to cover yet I dont know what the fancy cast iron scroll is from but it looks old

wow, now this will be a good spot to concentrate on. Hit the sides of the road too and any place that looks like a nice resting spot. Best of luck to you Gunnar and hope you pull some nice coins out this area. - Jim

Really nice spot epl and theres not to much underbrush by the looks of it. I got some nice places to hunt that are colonial but they are absolutely loaded with briars, those long green vines that grow out of the ground with the sticker points on them. Really nasty stuff, cant even begin to walk in between the stuff its so thick.
I see some green in your pics, you best hurry before it gets growing there. Good luck to you there.

That looks like a really good area to hunt. Watch for pull over spots among the big trees where they could stop and get out. Also, watch for high spots (even a foot or more higher than the surrounding ground) where they would pull over on a high spot and get out without having to walk in swampy ground during the wet season. I've found a lot of good coins in spots like this, where the ground was just a little higher (even a foot) than the surrounding terain. Also, high spots like that were good to set up camp on. First rule of camping is always to set your tent on a high spot so you don't get flooded out during a rain. If you have ridges or hills in the area then watch for the one way they could get over places like that. I've also dug coins on slopes going up or down ridges and such that were the only place to get over them. That's where I got my silver 3 cent piece from. Often when they started going up or down a spot like that the coins would fall off the wagon or out of their pockets.

Critt, great advise, I will leep this in mind, and jim yes a resting place, -- neil I know what you are talking about soon it will be so over grown you cant swing a coil , and those thorny things they grow up and arch over and grow roots in the spot they contact the ground and its just like a trip wire, and they have barbs I had to dig them out with a shovle along the bank of the river befor detecting that spot but its lots of work and when its 85f you cant get much done

Gunnar, you're making my feet itch to get to the land again! An old road like this has been in use since the 1790's on the family land, and much of that has been in use until just a few years ago. The other half of it, about 1/4 mile long, looks like your area. I hope to see some videos or photos of your finds, and look forward to finding out how long you can hunt this area. Don't know what the cast iron scroll is, but it had to be functional rather than ornamental only; something like for holding the handle of a pot over the fire or similar. The area looks like a house would have been there possibly too. Good Luck!

OK, Gunnar...I'm ready to help.....hehe

Nice spot. I read somewhere that someone was detecting the center of an old stage road and found a small can with a couple oz of gold nuggets.
They apparently lost stuff during travel when horse drawn vehicles were used.

Are there any old large trees in those woods? I'm able to hunt the woods all summer by concentrating on areas with large old trees. Keeps the underbrush from growing in those areas. 20 acres? That should keep you busy for a while.
