Found some keys and coins with my handheld detector

The other day while using my handheld detector to conduct a search of someone we took into custody I found some keys and coins in his shoe, this gave me a thought. First an idea of what it is, this is powered by a 9 volt batt and slips over your hand with the batt on the back of the hand and the sensor in the center of the palm it vibrates when put close to metal, the thing picks up items as small as the metal rings on shoelace holes, but has to be fairly close to do so maybe about 1 to 1 1/2 inches from the object. Do you think instead of buying a pinpointer I could use this. If that sounds like a dumb question please keep in mind I'm new to this MD'ing hobby.

Oldest joke in the book man - - and still a goody!

Using the glove detector as a pinpointer? Well if you made a hole big enough to stick your mitt into, sure. I think it would work better for "handful detecting," like when you pick up a suspect handful of dirt to see if the coin is in it.

Whats it range. It might be good for snooping around inside of walls with - from the outside. Mostly though, I like to be careful where I put my grippers. Try it, but plan on getting a dedicated PP'er and making it your "backup."

Dav, I ordered a PP'er and am glad that I was not just wasting the money. I am looking forward to that detector even my wife and kids are talking about search sites. I have learned and continue to learn from the posts here, thanks to you and the others for a great forum and the open sharing of a wide variety of information. Had to remove the signature, its not to cold in Texas but the back porch is hard marble tile:stretcher: Oh and Willy I would not bitch if I was hung with a new rope, he$$ I'd settle for a slightly used rope.

It is john I may try that on South Padre Island down here see how I do I'll just scoop and run my hand thru the sand. Think it will come in handy for going thru dug dirt for objects as well, once I get the ACE.

A type of screen works good for that. Shake it and there is your treasure. They sell scoops for about $35. I thought the hand held would be good while swimming in the water. You know, like all those state parks in Tx. you can't detect in. Hide it in your swim suit and take it out when they can't see you in the water. Lots of gold in that water.

No dumb questions. If it picks up shoe eyelets it will certainlypick up a coin but an inch or so doesn't give you much of a spread. I would certainly try it. Are there any adjustments on it at all?

Yea, it could certainly help at times. The only
drawback I can see vs a real pinpointer is the
pinpointers have long skinny probes to reach down into
holes. Or at least the automax I have is that way.
But I would sure give what you have a try. Better
than nuttin.. I'm really spoiled on having a pinpointer,
and am glad I bought one with my 250. It sure helps
find those tiny dirty objects, and objects on the sides
of holes, etc..
As a spurious note..I tried using a regular ole compass
as a detector when I was looking for some property
markers a few months ago. I had read up on surveying,
marker finding, etc, and some of the surveyors mentioned
using a compass to find lot markers. "iron".
Well, I used my 250 to find the markers, but as a test
I whipped out my compass which is one of the clear plastic
types used for hiking, etc.. It's pretty decent..
Well, danged if it didn't work. I'd move the compass across
the iron markers, and sure nuff, the needle would swing.
Is that a cheap detector or what? :) I say, if it's there,
might as well use it.
