I found that while the characters on the back look similar, they are not always as similar as we westerners might think. The markings on the back refer to the Emperor at the time of minting, and a unit marking. The person that explained this to me, and translated the coin said it would say "treasure dollar" The Emperor on the coin was Ch'ing-Lung whose given name was Hung-Li. He was the 4th emperor of the Ch'ing dynasty. So, all this means that the coin was minted sometime during the mid to late 1700's! That makes me happy!

The "cursive" markings on the front refer to an area of a province in China.

ps. This was interpreted by my sons chinese swim coach, whom many of you might remember was persecuting my son earlier this year. God does answer prayers!!!
