Very nice find! Very interesting to say the least. Just curious though, what makes you believe it is from the Civil War era? Are you in a known Civil War era location? It looks to me like it came from the top of a staff that the Roman Catholic priests use. I remember seeing those during mass services when I was young. The Catholic church may still even use those staffs today.
