Found near and old RR line.

I found this thing, that I hope is a cannon ball, very close to one of the oldest railroad lines in the USA, between Sacramento and Roseville Ca. It is about 3" in diameter and weighs about 6 #. Any ideas as to what it is? I'm thinking a bearing from a railway car but hoping for something more exciting. There is a line all around the middle of it like it was made in two pieces?!

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Hi Cliffhanger;
Dose it have a hole in it? If not, then it looks like a mill ball. The line around it could be made in a mold.
It could be used in mining, grinding ore, or grinding grain like wheat or corn. Or maybe something.
Hope this helps.
Willard in Spokane.

Fill it with kerosene and put a cloth wick in it and you have a typical railroad flare....
