Found my oldest wheatie Yet!

New member
Thanks to the FAQ's especially Diggers advise. Yesterday I pulled out a 1926 Wheaties @ 4"s is the oldest I've got in my collection so far using the 6" DD coils I found it within 4'S of 3 nails and 2 pieces of PT"S along with 10 zincs and 6 copper and 2 dimes one should be inducting as the most abused coin ever It's literally bent in have hammered ETC.. detector had a hard time with it along with that a brass or copper button with a flower design and I think a zinc button large with a cool rope pattern around it, penny with an upside down cross cut into it? and finally a token with genie front and what looks like the taj mahal on the back... I would;d say this was one of my more different outings! Grant any advise on cleaning the Penny? to verify the date I've stared at it for an hour and I know 192 But thee last letter is a ?

Great finds !!! To clean the penny, gently clean with some soap and water to get the thicker stuff off. Go very easy, you don't want to scratch the coin. Then put a small amount of Hydrogen Peroxide in a small plastic container. Heat the H.P. in the microwave until it boils. This should take less than one minute. Put the penny in the hot H.P and watch as it bubbles and fizzes the dirt away. You can heat the H.P. a couple of times, after that replace it with some fresh solution. Just be sure to take the penny out before putting it in the microwave. It does a great job of removing the dirt from the coin, but does not remove metal from the penny. You may have to do this 4 or more times to get the stuff off the coin. Just let the solution do it's job, when it's done fizzing, heat it up again. It has worked great for me.

Good hunting, John K

Congrats on the finds, Grant. I use the method that Rifleman suggested and have had great results from it. I wanted to add that I find it speeds things up quite a bit if you use soap and water and a soft-bristled brush between each dunking in the peroxide. Afterwords, I dry the coin thoroughly and coat it with a bit of wax. I use regular old paraffin wax. Really brings out the coin's detail and I hope, helps to preserve it.

Went and found a couple of pics to show the before/after peroxide result. The "uncleaned" pic is not really uncleaned...I soaked them for an hour in water, then cleaned them with soap/water and a nylon bristled brush. The "cleaned" pic is after two or three dunkings in the hot peroxide and the addition of wax.

To tell you the truth, I've got several that are far more impressive, results wise. Just couldn't get the files where I'm at right now.

but does the wax polished the coin I as told by a dealer not to polish the coin as it lowers value of course same guy wanting my1943 walking liberty coin for $ 3.00 when he sells his for $6 to 15 dollars hes got a buckets full of them and one looked at was not even as close to s clean and I would say at least 3 points less on the the MS scale just cant afford to get these appraised till i found something older or that gold piece that's alluding me! I think the wax is a great Idea. Thanks, for the replies Good hunting to all! again I cant say enough about this forum I've received more practical help and tips and good people then the other sites in 6 months. Still looking for that hunting partner though! I can pretty much hunt whenever I want I sold my house in Vegas two months Before the breakdown and made over 100K in less then 2 yrs on the flip side I have a rental thats decreased in price by 50% + on an arm that's gonna kill me! sorry that's off subject I apologize! Good luck to all of you lets start fining those Spanish coins and gold pieces! I live on the OR.WA coast an I know there's been hundreds of shipwrecks so there out there somewhere also along the Columbia river at FT. Vancouver the Spanish came into trade the site itself is off limits but I found two very old bullets One musket and a few short White bullets with two rigs near the trading post and river I assumes are push rod bullets that came out after the round ball. don't know for sure! .
