So I found this flat or cuff button(?), or I think that is what it is, with my Compadre(which I've used only about 10 times). This is my first metal detector, and have been having fun using it so far, but it is hard to find places for me to hunt since it is illegal in most of the cities near me(I'm in Hampton Roads VA). I did not realize that I had even found it until I was showing a friend of mine some of the things I had found. When I origionally found it, I thought it was the metal part off of a shotgun shell because it was caked with dirt and I found part of a shotgun shell really close to it. It was really cool finding this in the box of stuf that I have found, I was so excited! I accadentally broke the back park off, the hook or whatever, but I still have it. It kinda made me mad I broke it, but nothing i can do now. I am inexperienced when it comes to cleanng them, so I will know to be more careful next time...obviously.

So I have looked at a few websites that have flat and cuff buttons, and I can not seem to find this one anywhere. Does anyone know what this one is and if it is worth anything?
It might be hard to make out in my pictures, but it looks like and eagle or some kind of bird flying or getting ready to land like the great seal on the dollar bil.

Edit: I think I just answered my on question while writing this, is it a great seal button? I just googles eagle on the dollar bill and realized it is the same depiction lol.

Nice find on that button. I hope it is a good one for you. You are going to love that compadre. It is so easy to use and very light weight. When it is warm out that battery will last forever.
When it is cold, You better have a spare in your pocket. When the battery starts to go dead, your detector will start to run a little funny. You will get a lot more chatter. When you hear that extra chatter, just change the batteries. Have fun with it .. It is a great detector for the size... KEN

Buttons can be hard to ID. I have one that I cant find anywhere on the internet. It looks military but maybe its just a fancy button.

nice button, to badd about restrictions maybe you can find some private property.

Yah I have permission to go in the yards of a couple houses that my friends live in. They are not huge areas to hunt, but are old and I found the handle of a spoon or fork that says US on it in one. I have not hunted the other place yet, but it is right next a a civil war monument that says a battle took place there :).

Have you tried googling union uniform buttons from the civio war... your part of town is swamped in civil war history most of that area was unsettled in that time... being from maryland i know there were alot of encampments all around the state that arent marked as historical "sites" but you can look at old military maps that show crossings and movement paths of companys and battalions. Might be worth researching. Gl and HH. RN

Where would I be able to find maps like this?

Google search the area you found it and do a civil war troop movement and location searches through google you can also try find your local historical society's they might have some resources to could also try local libraries. It will take time to get information but once you have it youll be better off with your next finds

I believe you have a button from between WWI and WWII. take a look at this post, they do a good comparison. http://metaldetectingforum.com/showthread.php?t=48022. Also, if it helps I can post some pictures of some buttons I've found. I too am from the tidewater of Virginia. A buddy of mine lives in Hampton and we get out as often as we can, if you're ever interested I can let you know when we're heading out in your area, we don't mind getting together with fellow detectorists. I've got access to private sites for the battle of big bethel, Richmond battlefield, and the battle of wilderness. HH
