Found my first buffalo nickel today!!!!!

New member
I found a 1919 buffalo nickel today metal detecting, in a local park. Everything I have ever found there has always been fairly modern. This baby was down about 4 inches, man I am excited!!!!

what is the best way to clean it, I can read the date when it is wet but when it dries I cannot see it, is there a way to safely bring out the details...........here is a pic

Nice find. I use a stiff nylon brush with soap and warm water first. Then soak in vinegar for about 30 minutes, keep checking so that the surface doesn't pitt and leave longer if necessary.

Nice. The first one I found you could barley read the date. The 1919 I found last month was in real nice shape. You need some Nic-O-Date to bring out the date.

wow is that safe?

ok here is the buffalo after light cleaning with vinegar, basically I rubbed it in my palm then rinsed with water, should I do anymore?

Man awsome find!!!! Thats the problem with the buffalo nickel, the date is the highest point on the coin, the same thing with the standing liberty quarter. A few years ago I came into came int a full roll of buffalo nickels, 95% of them had no dates, lol.

I can read the date while holding it in my hand but the photo just does not show it, oh well! It is my first, and I am happy :clapping:

Yea, I dunno around by me the only coins I have found have been modern. The parks and schools around my were all built in the 50's. I figured I would of come across some wheat's or silver...
Clean it with soap and water.
Bet it will come out looking nice.
Did you find it at that trailer park?
RR
nope.........just a public park
