it may be a more modern black powder projectile, based on what the pointed tip end looks like. some soils can turn the lead white quicker than others. big chunk of lead that you would not want to find the hard way for sure. a nickle is a little over 2 mm in width. that might be a 58 caliber maybe?

Looks like a 58 cal three ringer used during the Civil War. The impression in the top of the minnie ball appears to have been made by the ramrod. It's wasn't uncommon for a soldier to drive the ramrod hard home and live the ramrod impression. TomB
 
tomB is exactly right . I would go back to that same area and dig all signals, theres so much history in civil war items .Just wash the mini ball with plain water to preserve the patina. Hope You have more good finds.

I agree but I think thats a dime ,so too small for a .58
