Found Gold with the Racer 2

JEF

troll
Was hunting a school sports field, and found this woman's wedding band. It was about 6 or 7 inches down in the ground. I was using the 5.5 x 10 coil. I was using the 3 tone mode, and had the gain set at 85. My wife was with me, and she was just saying that I never find anything good when she goes out with me.

people always say that about me . that ring redeemed you . that got pretty deep , sounds like it was not lost yesterday. I also like to set the three tone at 85. i found the two tone in my soil likes less gain for better sound

It came in at 45 on the racer. It was not a real solid signal, but it was fairly consistent. I dug it mainly out of curiosity to see what it was. I was surprised when I saw what it was.

Beautiful ring!!
Why isn't your racer2 in you list of detectors?

I recently sold the Racer 2 here on the Finds Forum. I liked it OK, but I preferred my MXT All Pro and my Tesoro Bandido II Umax over it. Lately I have been using my Bandido and Outlaw most of the time. I have the 5.75" coil on the Outlaw for tot lots, and the 8" donut coil on the Bandido for general use. I am 71 years old, and my back really appreciates the light weight and balance of the Tesoros. I can swing them a lot longer without my back hurting. The Racer 2 is fairly light, but with the 5.5x10 and the 7x11 coils, it is nose heavy, and pulls on my back muscles more. The MXT is heavier, but it is so well balanced that it feels better to me than the Racer. I did like the features of the Racer 2, and I thought it worked very well.

JEF, congrats on the nice ring find. I really do like my Red Racer & Racer 2, but for many of the reasons you listed above is why I like the Fors CoRe so well. Same performance but like the MXT it is balanced very well. Its a joy to use when using the bigger coils. A lot of the times I will leave the small 4.7 x 5.2" coil mounted on the Racers and use the 5.5 x 10 coil or stock 11 x 7 on the CoRe machine when detecting more open less trash/iron areas.

Another problem that I had with the original red Racer and the Racer 2 was coil ears breaking and bolts breaking. I had the ears break on both the 5.5x10 and the 7x11 coils. They replaced both of them, supposedly with the stronger ears. However, I recently sold my Racer 2 package on this forum, and when the person received it, he went to put it on the rod and and the ears broke on the 5x10 coil again. I refunded part of the purchase price back to him, since he didn't get everything that he paid for. I have also had both the old and new bolts break. I replaced all of the Makro bolts with some white nylon bolts that I got at True Value hardware.

Ya there are a few of the older( brittle plastic) coils still working their way through. If you encounter one just contact: Metaldetector.com 800-446-0244 They will have you send in the defective coil and send you a brand new one. Ya I also had to replace a few coils as well in the past. You might tell the person that has the bad coil that it can be replaced, all he has to do is mail it in.

Even with the coil ears and bolts problems, I really did like the original Racer and the Racer 2. I thought they were both nice detectors. I just liked my Tesoros and MXT for my type of hunting. I hunt mostly local parks and schools, for coins and jewelry.
