Found at a Civil War campsite (surgeon's tool?)

I have found several bullets that appeared to be taken from flesh at this site in town. This town is near the battle of Shiloh and every house in town was commandeered by Grant to be used as a hospital during and after the Battle of Shiloh. It was covered in thick rust until it was placed in my elecrolysis tank.

It looks like part of a latch or lever, the release, could be a firearm, door, cabinet, etc, just a guess. What is the writing or design on the thumb lever.

As far as medical tools go it reminds me of a bone curette, specifically the cup shape part on the hook end. (At one time in my life I was a Medical Aid that sterilized medical instruments). Oh what size is it?

I will take a pic with a ruler beside it when i get home from town. Thanks for trying guys. I really think that the cup was for the thumb to rest in and the two prongs for the the fore finger and middle finger. I could be VERY wrong though. I HATE finding something that looks like nothing anyone has ever seen. And the ONLY thing that ever comes out of this site is relics. Thanks.

If a thumb will fit into the "spoon" portion, and the two arms allow it to raise and lower. It looks like some sort of release/stop. Press down with your thumb and the wheel turns, let off and the bar drops down into the slot that will stop the wheel from turning. Sort of like a ratchet, gear, gizmo, thingy, you know. I don't know what the part would be called.

I would say that the two arms (pins) are the fulcrum point of the lever and the small pin on top of the arms may have been a spring seat, still just a guess.

n/t

Don't know what it is but it looks like the gizmo that was used for lifting the covers on the top of an old cooking stove/oven.

Using a cloth tape measure, it is 5 1/4 inches tip to tip. But laying it on a table, and measuring without following its curvature, it is 4 1/4 inches. It would take a thick door. If you put it in your hand, and use your pointer and middle finger over the two prongs, with thumb in the thumb rest, I guess that you could hook an eyeball and pull it out but it is too dull for that. Well nuts. Yet another THING for the box. Thanks for your feedback. I DO appreciate it.

I am thinking that the latch is the best guess so far. if for no other reason that surgeons tools are usually not plain iron. They seem to be plated or stainless.

Thumb latch for a door. That's the part that actually goes through the door to the other side.

It's long because the curved end acts as a handle on the other side of the door to operate the latch:

Nice find. You should go back and try to find the rest of it!
