It's been awhile since I've posted, life has gotten in the way the past year or so and I haven't had many opportunities to play.

A friend of mine lost a Case knife in his field about 9 months ago and asked me if I would look for it. He gave me general idea where he lost it but it was too large an area for the limited time I had to hunt. He was at work so I'll go when he can be there and narrow down the area for me. But I did find this and was hoping someone could ID it for me. Is it a hat or lapel pin? Any idea how old? It appears to be made of lead. I didn't find any other relics, mostly square nails and pieces of aluminum, etc.

Also, some help would be appreciated as far as the settings to use. I threw my knife on the ground and with iron disc set at 99 it just clicked as I ran the coil over it. I lowered the sens to 25 and got a -11 to -15 reading with a low throaty signal. Actually, that is how I found the pin (?), it read around -16 which is unusual, in my experience for lead items. Could that be because I had the iron sens set so low?

Heres the back.

Thank you for ID help and any suggestions you could throw my way!

Hi Doug,

Maybe some of the relic guys can help you out on the pin. As far as the readings go, it is not unusual for pocket knives to read as iron. with the iron disc at 99 it may have given a slight pop or non-ferrous reading but lowering the Iron disc (which I assume is what you meant when you said you lowered the sens) would cause it to give an audible iron response and the negative reading you saw. As far as the pin reading as iron, that may be because the C$ was seeing the pin part mostly and not the lead. Items on or near the surface that are a combination of metals (ferrous and non-ferrous) can confuse the C$ a bit. Now when they are down a bit deeper it should read the lead and give a + reading. I don't know why that is but I have seen it enough times to know that it does happen.

...I thought it was melted lead when I dug it up but after cleaning a little dirt off it has a green tint. Could it be brass or copper?

I guess I'll be digging a lot of targets to find the knife? We've had less than an inch of rain in the last 8 weeks and the ground is really hard to dig. After we get a good soaker I'll try again.

You assumed right, I meant iron disc and the machine responded exactly as you described it.

I appreciate your response, Tom!

If you want to take out any guess work, you might consider switching to all metal. I'm sure the C$ will hit hard on something as large as a knife. Good luck.
