Found a treasure of sorts tonight..

Uncle Willy

New member
When I drove in the driveway I noticed my neighbor sitting on his front steps cutting up boxes for recycle ( garbage goes out tonight ) so I walked over to shoot the breeze. I noticed some records sticking out of one of his big garbage cans so I inquired about them.

He said he had a bunch of them he had aquired from another party and was getting rid of them. I asked what kind they were and he said they were old LP's but he didn't know by who. I told him they might be worth some bucks but he said they were worth nothing to him.

So I walked over to the can and started thumbing through the stack of records and up came an early Beatles, Led Zepplin, Animals, Johnny Rivers, Temptations, Moody Blues, Juicy Lucy, Eric Clapton, Helen Reddy, BIll Cosby, Ray Charles, and the list went on. So I told him he could throw all those records my way. So we carried them over to my house - about 50-60 of them. He then informed me that he had about a another 100 or more out in the shed he wanted to dump, so I'll be sorting through records for part of tomorrow. Should be an interesting treasure hunt.

I already have some old records including the first 45 RPM Sun recordings by Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins. Guess my collection will get bigger and wind up on Ebay someday. My Elvis records are worth about $1500 a pop. At one time I had all his original Sun records but some got stolen including the most valuable one - his very first Sun recording.

Made out like a bandit on those.. Many are getting
hard to find.
Time flies..Seems like yesterday when the record
was the normal audio medium. In the 60's, 70's,
I never really thought they would vanish so quick.
But digital took over. I'm not even sure if they
still sell decent turntables.. I know they have the
"scratcher" models, but I'm not sure how good those
are for normal recordings.
I had a bunch of family reel to reel tapes that
I wanted to transfer to digital to preserve them.
You can't hardly find reel to reels any more new.
So I bought a couple of older used ones..
A sony and a tandberg. Got em real cheap.

There are turntable to be had, but not many.

If only he knew what he had Bill! We're still sitting on a box of LP's. I've still got the original Star Wars movie music on a double LP that was given to me as a Christmas present back in the 70's.
I know of a guy in a neigbouring town that has a house full of old records, mostly pre 1930's. They're worth an absolute mint.
Mick Evans.

Treasure is where you find it! Your treasure just happened to be in the trash! You were very lucky to show up when you did. I saw a TV show where they said vinyl was coming back some. It was a show called "how it's made". Sounds like you could start a store up with all you records. Great finds!!

I bought my wife a combo set that looks like a old radio. It has a turntable a cassett player a AM,FM radio and a cd player. Looks just like a old RCA radio. It works well. We've used our old Lp's on it and they sound real good.

I agree good luck and good timing, Bill. Now comes the challenge.

You hear it all the time, including here and now:
"Thats worth some money"

Yet, Im pragmatic or maybe a pessimist or both. I'm not convinced of the "mint" worth of any and every old thing that comes along - at least not until someone has ponied up the dough for it. This includes Led Zeppelin records or any other old vinyl.

Here's an example. I have a bunch of old bottles that I dug - some very nice ones. Excellent condition, "rare" according to sources and so on. So what's my gripe?

The junk aint worth a plugged nickle. I can't sell it on ebay and all the same sources who said they were valuable don't want them at any price. People at the flea market laugh when they see them. 'Truth is, they've cost me money from the time I acquired them. Investment? Yeah, right. Someone here want to pay the shipping and you can have them.

Now, some old stuff is collectible, at least some of it. Some of it is actually valuable. But, not everything old is and it falls on you to know how to tell. Often enough, it's more costly to realize any money from such stuff than it is worth toting and storing and cleaning it up...

In your case, Bill, some of those records might be "worth" something...once you actually sell them. I mean original, first-issue Elvis recordings. Yeah.
But some scratchy old Barry Manilow vinyl? Hmmmm - doubtful.

Yeah not everything that is old is worth a bunch of money - just some of it. Some years ago a friend of mine bought an etching at the Salvation Army Store for ten cents. Found out later it was worth a buck or two and sold it for ten grand. I've got a big mantle clock I've got to check out some day. Was made in 1853.

My wife collected dolls for many years ( many oldies ) and I've got to start weeding them out one of these days - all 600 of them. :) I watched this gal on Antiques Roadshow with a tiny card table that they appraised at $300,000. She took it to Sothebies in L.A. and it auctioned off at $495,000. One never knows.

Me to. Ya know old Barry is 65 and still knocking them dead. Lot of the old rockers are in their mid to late sixties - like Tom Jones who still gets panties thrown at him. :)

Bill

Yeah in this bunch are some old movie and TV themes. I don't know what's in the other 100 or so he has. Didn't get a chance to check them out today.

Bill

I've still got an 80 watt AM/FM stereo with remote speakers stored upstairs with eight track and turn table for all speeds. The guy with the records says he has an old record player with the bunch so I'll have to check that out. His dad has an old Victrola ( crank type ).

Yeah I'm anxious to see what else he has. I still haven't been over to go through the other bunch. He was over this evening and I forgot to ask.
