found a semi-key date coin this morning...

I got out for a short hunt this morning to my favorite "hunted-out" park. After just a little clad, my last dig of the day held a few surprises. Just before turning off my machine to end the hunt, I got a really sweet silver-sounding signal, but it was VERY shallow. Expecting just a good-sounding clad dime or perhaps a small silver ring, I just located the target with my Pro-Pointer and then popped it out -- and imagine my surprise in seeing a silver dime! A closer look revealed not only silver, but a Barber dime -- a 1906-O.

After getting home and checking my "red book," I got surprise number two -- the '06-O is a semi-key date. While the obverse of this coin is not in quite as good of shape as the reverse, I think the coin would grade a solid F-12, which in that condition is worth roughly $50. Though I don't sell any of my coin finds, it's still neat to dig a more valuable than normal coin -- especially from 1/2" deep! I have no idea how that coin ended up so shallow, and how it got missed...

Thanks for looking!

Steve

Nice find, good going!! It has been a while since I found a barber.

Nice one Steve !!

I can't see LIBERTY on the headband in the picture but it must be there if you figure it for an F-12.

Still a keeper no doubt ! Congrats !

Nice find Steve.

I bet that coin hit was dismissed as clad by a lot of other hunters in the past.

I'm guilty of it at least 10 times each hunt:smoke:

Thanks all!

Yep Bryce; I had wondered the same thing...I'm guilty of it, too, sometimes, but since this was to be the last dig of the day, I figured it was worth it to go ahead and dig it, and I'm glad I did! :) I learned a lesson...

Yes, Dave -- you are right on. The "LIBERTY" doesn't show up in the picture, but you can make out all the letters in "LIBERTY," if you look closely -- the "Y" being the faintest. It just didn't show up well in the picture. Funny thing is, while the "wear" on the word "LIBERTY" might make it hard to get F-12 out of the obverse, I think the reverse could go as high as VF-20...at LEAST F-15, I thought...

Anyway, here's a scan of the coin's obverse (instead of a photo), where I think the "LIBERTY" shows up a bit better...

What did you think about the reverse, Dave? Did you feel it had more detail than the obverse?

Steve

I would say that the wear is about even for both sides, maybe slightly better condition on the reverse. I would definately grade it at F-12 or better.

And I never, ever pass up a dime ... clad or otherwise. :detecting:

Nice one, Steve - I haven't found a shallow silver coin yet, but have found silver rings when digging shallow "clad" signals. Congrats.

I try not to pass up those shallow coins, but depending how tired I am and the area I am hunting, I have done the same thing. lol I sure love those barbers, especially with mint marks. Congrats!

Sweet find; how many times it happens that way just at the end of a hunt, sweet sound, sweet find.
