my son and I were out today looking for somewhere new to hunt and when we passed a local park I saw a guy swinging his detector, so I thought I'd stop to meet him.

Glad I did, he recently started detecting as well and said he was looking for a hunting partner. He lives in my town, about the same age as me. I was pretty happy!

He proudly showed me a 1903 indian head he just excavated at the park, he was hunting with a DFX. We exchanged numbers and said we will be contacting one another to meet up and hunt somewhere.

well he said he bought a 250 in october of 2007 and his wife wanted a detector so he gave it to her and bought himself a DFX

Then you know his wife is the more successful hunter! While he's fiddling with over 2000 combinations of adjustments you will be digging up targets. The more targets you dig the better chance of finding a great treasure. I personally think a lot of detectors can give you too much info. This will lead you to only dig less targets. Try not to complicate your 250. I know some hunters don't mess with a jumpy target ID on the 250. But if I get a consistent beep and the ID jumps from low, medium and high I'll dig. Here's why -- I ask myself why is this 250 lighting up the quarter block? Does it know something I don't? Yes the ID's are jumping around but I'm getting a high coin ID. Why? I won't know unless I dig it out! I do this when I have a lot of time to hunt. Don't let your detector talk your way out of digging!

hmmmmmmmm, I get a lot of bouncy signals and everytime I dig it has been junk, not once yet has a bouncy signal been good. How many of those are good for you?

Not many have been good targets. The 250 IS pretty smart. Since Jan 1st I would guess I have dug maybe 300 really jumpy targets that beeped every time. I will say I dug about 20 coin targets. Most were from deep rusty caps to deep tabs and everything in between. I do remember a frozen tot lot I hit the first of January where I had a beep from iron to nickel. Since it was easy digging the first 3 inches I kicked the sand around and could hardly find the ever so tiny child's gold ring. It takes a lot of time to dig all your targets. In fact I don't have as much time to hunt as I once did. I usually have like 30 minutes and I want to dig more of the high percentage targets. But my point I was trying to make is if you have the time dig most of your targets. Also a complicated detector can hit you with so many target profiles all at once you'll just end up digging high coins never to dig a gold chain.
Like Bill said "It just takes one" I have looked at a lot of Bill's rings and I'll bet a ton of them bounced somewhere in the junk range. What if he didn't dig?
PS: I just weighed a 14K gold chain I found last year and it's worth $130.00 That too was as iffy of a target as any. I also couldn't get a repeatable beep. If you have time on your hands then get dirt on them too!

Great!
Usually the only people I meet on the field is someone carrying a baseball bat!
I don't wait around to find out...I just abdicate the field!

Yea, the DFX is not a machine I'd care to deal with. It's the kind of machine suited for people to have a "technical" mentality, from what I understand.
I'm not sure about the XLT. All I can say is the MXT and the Ace seem to suite most people....but then I'd better underscore that statement and say a nice word about Tesoro!

The XLT has as many options too. They are good detectors but I'm not one to tweak every tiny aspect of a detector. I'm just not that smart. The Garrett's give you just enough adjustments without being confused.

When I get a bouncy signal that goes from iron to a repeatable notch, that is 6" deep, I always dig it. those are usually my best finds. If it is 4" or less it is usuallly rusty iron and I will usually pass it over. The more I have done that, the more I know when I have a good target.
