I live in southeast Iowa and have been hunting an old race track and have been doing ok. My find include a barber quater, a seated quarter, two seated dimes and a barber dime as well as crusty indians, v nickels and shield nickels. I need a little help on one of the seated dimes its a 1890 s and am curious what the large and small s look like. I know the odds of finding the small s variety is almost impossible but you never know. I am off work this week if anybody lives close by and would like to hunt.

[size=large]referanced my coin book ( the blue book ), and it makes no mention of differant sizes of mint marks for that year. it says your coin is a 4 variety.1860 - 1873 then resumed in 1875 thru 1891. only says one s type coin with a g-4 worth at least $7.00. your finding coins i don't expect to ever see out here in s.w. wa. good hunting.

The red book has 1890S Lg S and Sm S but no pictures or price for Sm S . My red book is from 2007. Good luck trying to find out differences.

[size=large]Fritz,
i got my red book out ( 2010 ) and can't find anything on that year regarding lg. or sm. s. where did you find it?
Only been detecting since may. part of the hobby is learning to read the books. only differances between the red and blue is one gives retail pricing and the other gives what a collector will give you. with that said, i'm still learning everything. so would appreciate help in learning these books.
so far i've only seen notes on what arrows are where or not there at all. nothing on the mint mark except it's location.

Okay!!! re-checked my red book and it DOES mention the differant sizes. the blue book doesn't say a word. even the red book only says that it's rare. and that's all. well just mentioning it as rare says it excist. so one would expect a value to be posted for it. more research i quess. it's part of the hobby, isn't it?

The small s is about 2/3 the size of the regular S. Most likely reason for that punch is it was misused from it's normal usage w/ small denomination gold and silver Half Dimes. I'll look through my library and see about getting a picture for you tomorrow.
