Forest trail give us capped bust 5C

New member
The leaves were falling and it was a beautiful day so went out for a few hours to a forest trail I've been eying. Even though it was only a few feet wide and a pain to navigate I got a 12-38 and out popped an 1837 capped bust half dime. Time to invest in the x-5 :clapping: The edges are wavy so it looks like the coin was used to unscrew a screw or something. Any ideas?

Other coins are older wheaties and the tag is an 1938 rabies vaccination tag. I've pulled many late 1800's and early 1900's coins from this spot but the bust really surprised me. That's the oldest silver I've found.

How deep was that nicey?

Been wondering because I have been doing some experimentation on depth readings vs VDI #.
That 12-38 falls out of the typical silver range.

NICE FIND!

That was a "Bust" of a hunt! Thanks for the pictures and congratulations on finding something some of us only dream about!

It was actually only about 3"-4" deep. Since it was in the woods I'm sure there wasn't any escavation done so that's how she fell and sank over the years. It's a half dime so smaller than a typical dime, that's why the CO numbers are lower. When I'm at a site that I know is old I usually dig everything from 12 CO up if it produces a good signal. You never know what you're gonna come up with. Surprisingly my oldest coins have typically been found at around 2"-6" down. I've pulled merc dimes at 9" and then right across the street a seated dime at 2" before.

Thanks for the kind words everyone :)

@Bunker The site I found the coin at is private and the general area has been inhabited since the early 1800's. This one just really surprised me because the oldest coin I had found there up to that point was an 1892 barber quarter. It was on a forest trail that ran right next to a creek so I'm guessing it was an old horse trail or something. Will definitely be spending some more time there during the fall/winter when there is less brush to compete with.

I remember last year I had a list of houses to go to and one of them was build in 1964 according to county records. I usually skip newer places like that but Dad is a ring hunter so we stopped there for him. I figured what the heck maybe I can pick up a few roseys or something. Got a good signal at about 6" and thought I was digging a possible Washington. Halfhazardly cut the plug and out popped an 1877 S seated half which I had scratched right down the back. I learned a hard lesson that day to pay attention to general age of the area and not perceived site age.

Awesome find dale  You're soooo close to bust so keep it up. I like to dig those high 20 low 30 numbers because it seems they are always something unusual. When you get the new comp figured out would love to see the pics.
