Can any of you share a better method of retrieving coins from grassy parks that are fairly shallow (say 3" or higher)? One that is quicker with less surgery on the grass. I have been cutting a trap door plug with my Lesche but this seems a little drastic too me in parks with lots of hits.

Thanks.

I too use a Lesche digging tool. Best darn digger I've ever used. Most of my finds are in the 1 to 3 inch range- I would say probably 85% of them are 3 inches deep or less. Here is what I do to retrieve targets. My Bigfoot coil pinpoints a target within about one inch of its exact location. Once I've located the target I push the digger into the ground about one inch or so behind the target. I then pull back and and then down on the handle so that the ground lifts up about a half inch. Then remove the digger and hold it parallel to the ground. Now slide or push the digger forward about two inches or so and lift up and forward. Now you can explore the hole visually or use a electronic probe (which I highly recommend). With a little practice you will be able to recover most targets in less than a minute. It is not uncommon for me to dig 40- 50 targets an hour- but then I dig a lot of pull tabs searching for gold rings. Hope this helps. Mike

I just pinpoint the best I can and when I know it is not very deep I will just use my screwdriver probe and probe for it real easy untill I touch the target and move the probe back and pop the coin out with doing very little damage to the soil.I found the perfect probe after many years as many were too wide or too short or even break easy. This one even is easy on the hands and you can feel when it makes contact with anything. I got it at Ace Hardware for around $5.
I thought Had a picture in my computer, but can find it, but it is around 13 inches long and a log narrow blade to it is easy to push in the ground and yet you can feel anything it touches.

I"ve heard of a person using a probe (screwdriver or icepick) to locate and then using a pair of forecepts to grab onto the coin and pull her out.... I think this might work !...havent tried it yet,,, but makes sense...will try it in the spring... Gene
