For those who would like an older Sovereign

JHM

I just bought an older sovereign an XS-2A pro. The best I can tell it's the last one they made prior to the elete. It has a problem and I emailed Minelab to see if they would service it. Here's the reply

"Good afternoon, sorry but we no longer service that detector anymore. But what I can do is have our specialist send you an email with any ideas he may have to assist you."

If your thinking about an older sovereign, I would think twice.

If it has a problem I would take it up with the person I bought it from. The older Sovereigns are great detectors if they work. I don't think you give up much of performance at all with an older model. It is a shame you bought a broken detector. I hope things work out for you.

I think the person will make it right. Actually I have a gt, I just wanted to try an older model. I hate ML wont work on them any more.

I love my Gt but can't imagine a company that's not willing to support it's own product even when the customer is willing to pay for parts and labor. I feel as if they just through us away. If it breaks don't call us. Come on ML have a little class and integrity and stand up for your loyal customers. We have love for you please show a little back. Tom:help:

JHM,what kind of problem? If you bought the item through Paypal usually they will give a 100 percent refund including shipping cost to the purchaser.I have bought a lot of used Sovereign's and find it's expected to find some minor problems but most can be fixed.Minelab announced a while back they won't work on the older black box Sovereign's you shouldn't be surprised. No use kicking a dead horse with Minelab's policy it is what it is.Good Luck Ron

No they announced they wouldn't work on the Origional Sovereign because they could not get part which I think is bull. If they changed it to all the older models I must have missed that. I'm not kicking a dead horse. I got a box that I cant use a meter on because the output voltage across pins 5 and 6 that provides a signal to the meter, is low. The range is from 0 to 1.8 VDC. It goes no higher the .5VDC . So a silver dime reads like foil. Funny thing Minelab is the only one who is having trouble servicing their older models. What are people supposed to do with their older sovereigns? Put them in the dump and go buy an etrac. Not me. I got the issue worked out with the seller but I really wanted to try this detector. It's not about the money, It's about unwillingness to help a long time customer of the product.

I almost bought an Old Sov Xs today for 250 backed out of the deal when I read your post.. if anyone else is intersted Pm for the guys number..

Elton, the old XS Sovereigns are one of the most reliable detectors around. At $250.00 you couldn't go wrong. You buy the old unit and it doesn't work out I'll buy it from you. HH Ron

JHM,the voltage on pins 5 and 6 should be low.If you are working from inside the box you'll notice 6 and 3 are bridged. You could have a bad meter out of the 10 Cen-Techs I have had two that won't work correct.I'm not sure what meter you are using but try a Cen-Tech.Take your test leads on the connector pins 5 and 6 or 5 and 3 from inside the box.If the meter is reading low for coins adjust the pot higher. My guess if the meter is working but the range isn't high enough the Sovereign is fine.Good Luck Ron

That is a tough question as i never tried it when I had a XS2a to see if that could happen.I don't remember anyone seeing this on the meter readings with the tones to a single tone.
JHM had E mailed me on this and was trying his 550 meter off his GT where he seen the lower reading on his XS2a. I had seen before myself where some meters will work on the GT and not on the XS2a for some reason. I seen this before too where some meters will not work on some Sovereigns, but work on another one, mostly been the XS2a, even 2 different XS2a where the one meter will work on one, but put it on the other one and it reads low or not at all yet the one will work on wither one. I did notice that when switched the calibration was quite a bit different too, but was still able to calibrate one of them.
I had a XS2a like this about a years ago and it had the Sun Ray DTI2 meter and it started reading low one day for the guy, so I checked it over and thought maybe I would try the meter off the used XS2 I had in the shop and it worked, but the calibration control was at max to get 179-180. Thought the meter was bad, but put in on the XS2 and it worked good with no problems, so I left it like that as both were working.
Myself i would try a different meter on the XS2a to see if it will read better or not and it seems like if I remember right it has always been the XS2a I seen this with and even tried the newer Minelab Digisearch on one and just got 000, but worked good on the XS2 and the GT I tried it on.

Myself I like the XS and the XS2 better than the XS2a, just seem like the XS2a didnt get the depth I could with the others and the GT seems to be the best one of them all for me anyway, very sensitive and has the depth in my area.

The voltage between pin 5 and the ground should range between 0 ans 1.8vdc depending on the conductivity of the target. It goes no higher than .5vdc. I have a homemade meter with an adapter that goes to the meter with a plug. This is where I measaure the voltage. I laso have a minelab 550 meter made for the xs-2 and it will read no higher then 160 with the calibration turned to max. Both meters work fine on my GT.
