For those who asked about my Cibola GB mod

Nice write up. Thanks for posting it. I am glad to see you included the note on the ground strap.

Very nice explanation and much appreciated Sven. I seen in your pdf file that you mod'ed a Silver Sbre uMax, I am using a Silver Sabre umax and would like to do the ground balance mod. My question is are there pads (holes) to soldier the wires to like in the Cibola or would I have to clip the g.b. pot and leave part of the legs off it to soldier the wires to. If you have apdf file for the Silver Sabre uMax mod I would love to have it. You could sent it to me (message me on the forum message service.) if you can. I live in upstate New York and believe that our ground is not mineralized that much, I set my internal ground balance on my Sabre alittle negative and then alittle positive and didn't notice a difference in depth. But then I do not have a test garden so I can accurately tell if a different g.b. setting makes a difference. Thanks! Steve.

I don't have any pix of my modd'd Silver Sabre anymore, thought it was saved on a backup disc. Looks like that disc was thrown away after being destroyed. And I can't find my original CD I made of the mod.
There are no bare holed pads in the SS umax. You have to remove the trimmer pot and use the holes that it was soldered to. If I recall correctly the trimmer pot was blue in color.

The SS umax that I added ground balance to, originally I used a single turn 12mm pot. Then decided to use the 10 turn Bourns pot, it is somewhat larger and will not fit in the upper part of the housing. It has to be lowered down, I switched with the Threshold pot. But, you could eliminate the pinpoint button and put it there like the Cibola.

Very nice, Sven. You did a great job! A superb instructional, too.

I've spoken to James Gifford at Tesoro about these mods and he refers me to their warrranty:

Our lifetime warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for as long as it is owned by the original purchaser. The warranty excludes batteries, damage caused by leaky batteries, cable breakage due to flexing, wear of the searchcoil housing, and leakage cause by the condition of water seals on underwater detectors. Also excluded are instruments which have been abused, altered, or repaired by an unauthorized party.

Fortunately, and this is from his own mouth, they aren't sticklers about the warranty and will take in most any Tesoro and repair it at no cost. No matter who currently owns it, or how old it is. I've had them repair a few of mine with these generous terms in effect, so I know this to be fact.

However, they do not want to cure your mistakes or work on a unit that is in for some other problem - AFTER you have doctored it. You will be charged to put it back to original condition plus whatever the charges are for additional repairs. Keep that in mind as you decide to modify your Tesoro, or the electronics of any detector.

It might be simpler and in your best interests to sell your non-GB Tesoro, and then use that money towards a Vaquero, Eldorado or Bandido.

Good point & you are right on. But there are those of us that like to tinker with things. I am about 99% sure that I am not going to mod. my Sabre in any way but I am not afraid to if I ever feel the urge to do so. If I messed anything up in any way I would not expect the company to repair it for free. To be honest I (this is my opinion) don't think that a manual ground balance is that big of a deal anyways, I would like to see someone that has a test garden and a detector with manual adjustable g.b. do an experiment for me. Search your garden with your g.b. set negative and search the the same area with your g.b. set positive and then search your garden with the g.b. set neutral and see if there is much difference if any. Thanks again! Steve.
