?? for those running Ferous tones

Have you notice it wont go as deep as the conductivity?? Not sure, but I have been using it and I had a couple of guy with the Explorer get me a good signal to check and I got nothing or a low tone, when dug were wheaties and silver dimes.
Also here is another one that has happened today, I run iron mask at a -14 and ferrous tones while the guy I am hunting with today was running iron mask at 0 so half the screen is blacked out and was running conductivity and was doing well as he had 2 mercs and 5 wheaties and I just had a couple of new coins. He got one of his signals and said it was a wheatie, I went over it and at first I got no signal, but started to get one, but if I didnt know it was there I may not have known it. When dug it was a wheatie.
I decided then and there to go to conductivity and iron mask at a -2 and every signal he got I got too.
Now I wonder why at -14 I had a hard time getting a signal while a -2 did OK. Maybe it was the conductuivty tone too that made the difference.
Anyone else experiencing this that runs Ferrous tones.
Rick

were all of your settings the same otherwise? audio, gain, sens, response etc?

Jim,
The only thing that I am not sure of is the gain, but I know I changed a few things to match his explorer as we went. The first I went to deep instead of fast like he was, then set conductivity instead of ferrous and got a lot of high pitched signals off of rusty iron.took off my 12 inch coil and put on the stock one. The other one was running 32 auto while I was at 25 manual, so I went to 32 auto, both of us run normal audio. The last thing was the iron mask as i was running mine either in a disc pattern with the top open to where -14 would be on iron mask or be running in iron mask at a -14. This is where the Explorer quieted down quite a bit and when he got a good signals I was able to get it. The only thing that we didnt check was the audio gain as i run mine higher than normal to hear the signals. I beleive I am at 8 or 9 while he is at 6 I beleive as it is the factory settings.
This was the first time I started to change my setting to match his as I always run ferrous and the iron mask at a -14 or my disc pattern and he has always got signals I cant and figured many time being I have the X 12 it may be picking up more trash and nulls out the signals of a coin. The other thing I had thought was that being in ferrous sounds and getting the low pitched of iron is I am hearing more of the low pitched and walk away, but if I was in condutivity I would be hearing the high pitched and would work the signal more and probably dig.
One thing I will say for the Explorer it does have power, but can be over powered too where you will lose good signals close to trash or lose depth. This is where I like to show how Iron mask and turning down the sensitivity work so much better, but in this case this weekend I am baffeled. The Explorer i went up against on Sunday is a new guy that got his a year ago and so far this year he has 37 IH pennies, 7 nice barber dimes and 3 barber half and a few barber quarters with his running his iron mask at 0 with conductivity and 32 auto mostly. I know it is odd, but how can you argue with success??

Hiya Rick,
I've been running ferrous tones almost every trip out (not as often as I'd like this year). I run clear screen with just nails notched out in the upper left corner, ferrous tones, 20 auto, gain - preset and generally run in deep or fast/deep or just fast.
Haven't had much luck at all with my explorer but that's another story, much of it self inflicted.
I was wondering though...not being lucky enough to find multiple IH's or silver dimes or silver at all in enough quantities to get to know the tones, do [in the settings I've mentioned] the crosshairs always show in the same spot no matter what the sounds are set for? I know about jumping crosshairs etc, but I mean in general. If a nickle shows up in that particular spot in conductive, will it show up in the same spot in ferrous. I'm talkin in the field, not air tests, which never made much sense to me anyway [A-t's]?
Gonna switch back to conductive and try my luck again. Thanks for posting this insight!

Rick, since you were hunting so close I assume you did a noise cancel so you werent on the same channel as he was.. next time he does it try having him turn his off and set your channel to match what his was.. I do believe some channels work better than others...

Jim,
Will have to try that next time. I was about 50 feet away from him most of the time if not futher. He would shut his detector down before I would turn mine on when we got close, but never did check which channel each were on.
I did go back to the sidewalk I have went over the last couple of weeks with the MXT 3 times, the Sovereign one time and the Explorer in ferrous and iron mask at a -14. Now I tried it in conductivity with the iron mask at a -6 and got a wheatie I missed, but there was a big piece of iron I took out first that was about 4 inches from the penny. I also got 2 new pennies i had missed plus a sewing thimble that were very close to the sidewalk.
Being I ran conductivity I did get a lot more rusty nails that sounded iffy and had to dig, you would think being able to get a small rusty nail at 7 or more inches the coins would come though too.
Next time I get a signal in conductivity that sounds good I will have to try ferrous and see what it will do.

Hey Rick,
I'm primarily a ferrous sounds open screen person. I've got that saved as User B in the settings menu and User A as an iron mask -12, conductive sounds (with some minor other differences). This makes if fairly easy to switch between different detecting modes for comparison. I haven't noticed any difference in depth between ferrous and conductive, assuming everything else is set the same, nor have any possible explanation for what you are seeing.
But.... I have found that I often still manage to pull more coins when I switch modes, think some signals stand out better in one mode (ferrous/conductive) than the other.
Good Luck
Chris
