For those of you experienced with the shutting down phenomenon......

Did anyone ever get a straight answer from the factory as to what was causing it? I had heard some different guesses, i.e. weak battery springs and something to do with the headphone jack. I have had my x-50 shut down a couple of times, when it was leaning toward the left. But it hasnt done it for quite a while. Just wondering if I should send it in, and if I did, would they even do anything for it. Was this just a X-50 thing, or did the 30 and 70 have the same problems? Thanks,

J. Brown

Shutting down was a common problem a while back. I had the same problem on mine (one of a few). I resolved it by gently teasing the springs out. I had sent it into minelab to sort out a problem with the speaker not working and the pinpoint playing up constantly, and I mentioned, that it would shut down sometimes. They got the speaker going, and the pinpoint works better (still not really reliable though) and the shut down problem went unresolved. The report said that everything was functional.mmm. When I went into a metal detecting shop that I shall not name (so that they can't be given any grief by Minelab)at Christmas and mentioned it, the implied response that I got, was that Minelab tend to want to stick their fingers in their ears and pretend that the problem doesn't exist. They are not alone with that thought. Hardly surprising, that I'm now using another brand of detector most of the time. It's a shame that that area of their business isn't tidied up, as I think that the X-Terra's are a great machine, as well as the Explorer. May even buy the Explorer down the track.
One thing that you can do to prevent further problems with the X-Terra shutting down, is to put the batteries in horizontally and don't drop them in, as this will compress the springs over time.
Good luck with your X-T50. they are sweet to swing.

turned out to be the batteries. A set of alkalines, they had a small dimple on the negative side for some reason that provided minimum contact. Ran a set of rechargeables through the XT70 until they went dead this week with no problems. HH, Mike
