Here's a mode done by the folks in the UK:

"The new Cibola/Vaquero Pro battery conversion....
A simple conversion for all Tesoro's and Laser's which currently run on 1x 9volt.
This neat modification allows you to run your machine on 6AA batteries. Resulting in much longer battery life.
This modification will not gain extra depth it has been designed because I have had several requests from customers wishing to accomodate RAM re-chargeable batteries,or AA Alkaline's resulting
in longer battery life.."

This is something that is not hard to do.

I prefer the single 9 volt myself, keeps the unit lightweight.

Swinging while carrying a fresh battery in a back pocket is easy. Putting a heavier battery pack behind the handle may actually make it feel a little lighter since it somewhat offsets the coil momentum when in motion and your elbow is the fulcrum. Don't think I would do this mod though.

Thinking about this a little; alkaline 9 volt batteries start out at 9.6 volts. Six AA's would be 9 volts (1.5volts x 6). Eight AA nicad's or NiMH's would be 1.2 volts times 8 = 9.6 volts .... but probably wouldn't want to put 8 alkaline batteries in it!!!

To each their own, but I can't see the advantage to this. Especially when you consider you're voiding the warranty.
