For my Tejon, Good or Bad Idea for Gold??

WV62

Well-known member
Guys I was gathering up all my gold jewelry to cash or trade in and at first I thought I would hold out a couple small ones to carry in the field for setup on disc. Then I thought just make a foil sample to disc out at the same level. The samples are only for my Tejon.

What do you think, good or bad idea?

Hi Ron, looks like a good idea but some rings the same size is 10k,14, 18, will they still fall in the same slot? See how different Ks. will do. Hope it works for you. I have a Tejon on the way to me now. Do you like the Tejon for coin hunting? Good Luck Dean

Dean,

I went back and checked my 2 samples and the smaller one just happened to be 10k and the med. size is 14k. But I wasn't really looking at the k more in the size and what I would like to hunt and how much trash I can put up with on a given hunt. To do what you ask I would need 2 or more rings identical except for the K, then maybe I could see if there is difference as to where they disc.

So for now on a typical hunt I may start off with the disc set low enough to accept the smaller sample and if the trash was to bad I would run the disc up to just accept the larger sample. Then if that didn't work I would go for a nickel which will get me the larger gold.

Now I think you will really like your Tejon, for me it seems to be a good coin and jewelry machine. I haven't got to check it out on the older coins but I got a spot picked out as soon as the weather lets up a little.

WV62,

I to have test pieces in gold & silver (julery) (+ silver coins) to check out things. How the machine is operating, how it compares to other MDer machines (as each has its strengths & weakness's).

Also I have test gold nuggets of differant sizes I've found over the years as test subjects to.

I believe its a good practice (just my opinion).

experiment using lead, almost the same response of gold

an interesting fact is that centuries ago alchemist tried to transform lead in gold, mysterious indeed... :O

WV62,
Periodically I'll check some of my wife's jewelry and compare to a few notes I have. I like the foil sample idea, but probably won't do that.

If it gives you a good feel for setting up what you want discriminated out and what you don't want to disc out, go for it!

Normally I'll go out hunting with a low discriminator setting and if I'm not in the mood to dig up all the trash on a particular hunt, I'll increase the discrimination a little to knock out more of the trash. Some days I'll hunt essentially all metal, others I'll knock out a lot of foil and probably miss the small gold too. Lot of areas get re-hunted so eventually I'll get the trash out of the way and go back to get the good small targets.
Cheers,
