? for Monte on balancing to asphalt

Hi Monte,
I saw your post on the official forum about GB'ing to asphalt and I'm confused. <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
You stated that asphalt is generally more mineralized and that GB'ing slightly positive to it will help a machine that had the initial GB set slightly too negative. Perhaps I'm over analyzing this, but that seems backwards to me.
Slightly positive on more mineralized ground or in this case the asphalt would send the detector to a more negative state in lower to moderate mineralization and not help the original "too negative" situation, wouldn't it?
I do know that balancing to asphalt works around here cause I use that "trick" at really nasty trash infested sites.
Please help my old brain figure this out. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

Easier to discuss back-and-forth via E-mail.
I'll do my best to try and explain this here, but if I leave you (or others) a bit confused, you're welcome to drop me an E-mail. I looked back on Tesoro's "Official" Forum, but I couldn't find the post you're referring to. If you would E-mail me the link I would like to double check what I said.
<STRONG>"I saw your post on the official forum about GB'ing to asphalt and I'm confused."</STRONG>.... Here is a reminder. Most references I make to ground balancing to asphalt are related to "Power Balancing" in the silent-search, motion discriminate mode. It can also be a way to get a functional GB setting in a threshold-based All Metal mode , but in the case of All Metal operation or set-up, it <EM>could be</EM> too positive. I will always try to emphasize <EM><STRONG>slightly</EM></STRONG> positive, but that's in All Metal. If "Power Balancing" in the Disc. mode, it is done to attain an andequate amount of GB adjustment such that there will not be any falsing during the search.
Not all makes and models are made alike, even from the same manufacturer. Some detectors have a separate factory preset GB for only the Disc. mode. Some have a factory set GB or even manually adjusted or autotracking GB for the All Metal mode that isn't tied to the motion Disc. mode. The instructions I use and suggest are for those trying to establish a workable GB, especially for a silent-search motion discriminate operation.
<STRONG>"You stated that asphalt is generally more mineralized and that GB'ing slightly positive to it will help a machine that had the initial GB set slightly too negative. Perhaps I'm over analyzing this, but that seems backwards to me."</STRONG>... Well, to break this down:

I'm no Monte, but if I could add how this helped my detector (Pantera). I had my detector properly balanced and went playground hunting. I came across a slight signal, and thought it might be a deeper dime. I scratched the surface, and there laid a quarter. After playing around with the ground balance, I found it took a slight negative GB in all-metal to get a good strong signal. I emailed Monte, where he then described the "power balancing" method to me. It works great! I now balance like this when hunting in open grass.
