? For EXCAL users, does it hurt battery pack to leave it on charge until you are ready for next hunt?

If you have a Ni-Cd pack and put it on charge every time you come back from a hunt, the pack will quickly develop memory.

Let's say you hunt for 2 hrs , put pack on the charger again , hunt for 2 hrs, put pack on charger again.............

You won't do this very many times before the pack is ruined. Will run for only 2 hours at best.

Minelab chargers are "trickle chargers". They charge at a fairly low current rate, so they won't cause damage if you overcharge a little. It's still not a good idea just to let them run.

Use your detector until the pack goes flat , then charge 12-14 hrs.

Art is correct about charging a Ni cad to top it off after every hunt and even a Nickle Hydride pack is not good to do either. Where I had seen some problems around here where some of the guy would leave them on the factory chargers and forget them for a few days and over charge them. The life of the battery on a hunt would not be as good either. I still have my SunRay Super charger that I used to use on all those packs that wouldn't keep a charge long and would discharge to a safe level, then charge to a safe level and go to a pulse trickle charge so if you forgot them for a day or 2 it didn't hurt them. I would do this twice and in most cases the battery would work fine again.
I am hoping some day SunRay make makes a super charger again as I am sure it save a lot of batteries.

Here's an FAQ from the Maha battery website:

Q: Can I leave my batteries in the charger until I need to use them?

For most NiMH batteries, including Maha rechargeable batteries, can be left in the charger for an extended period of time without leakage, explosion, or deformation. However, do not store the batteries in the charger if it is not necessary. Always store charged batteries in a cool location.

Maha is a manufacturer of NiMH batteries and chargers, and is well known and respected in the digital camera arena.

Here's a link to their FAQ website:

I leave one NiMH pack on the charger. When the one on my Elite quits, I replace it in the field with my Alkaline pack. When I get home, I swap the dead NiMH with the NiMH pack that has been sitting on the charger. I leave them on the charger about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks at a time, and they run for about 16 hours before they quit. Been doing this for about 2 years with no problems.

Hey Rick, I've been asking Ralph about when he is going to be coming out with another charger, but it is a low priority right now, and I'm looking for another option. Maybe, you can put a bug in his ear, and make it happen. HH,

I have been waiting too for a new one. I have one of the SR12 super charger and wont let it go plus a Q12 charger I keep for reserve and may sell when and if he ever make another one. I think he has been too busy with the Probes and the coils as everyone seems to want him to come up with one for different detectors as they work so great, but with luck they will get back to the battery chargers and the leather trash treasure bags that are also the best there is.
