Hey Bill,

I would like to know from your personal experience which large coil works best on the CZ's. The 10.5 made by Fisher or the 12 inch made by Sunray. I believe the Sunray coil would pinpoint easier due to the way the coil is made but which is deeper. If they are close inp erformance I'll just buy the 10.5 cause the Sunray coil is hard to find. If others want to chime in thats fine too. The more info the better. Thanks in advance for any comments.

I too would like to hear what Bill and others think.

I can really only compare use at the beach with those two. The Sun Ray FZ-12 on my CZ6a is my go to combination at the salt water beach unless I'm in the water, then I've been taking the Sand Shark more often than not; followed by the CZ20. The FZ-12's are getting very hard to come by. The 10.5 inch weighs about the same, but with the thicker profile, holds more sand when wet and gets heavier. And at the water edge, the 10.5 has more resistance to the water washing over it. I did not use the 10.5 inch over the dirt and very seldomly use the 12 inch over the dirt. The 10.5 went as soon as I got the 12. Hope others can talk to using the two coils over the dirt.
Cheers,
tvr

12 inch Sunray(not made anymore) gives several more inches, coverage seems to double from stock 8, easy to pinpoint, approx. same weight as Fisher 10.5 with a different design that seems to help ergonomics...Certainly a must for large fields and beaches. Wish I had one when I hunted N.J. beaches as the coverage is outstanding...

Had the same question and here is what i found. Not sure if it's definitive, it would seem that 12.5'' coil would go 1 to 2 inches deeper, but i guess not. I am not 100% sure what Tom means by the "volume of analyzed soil" and how that relates to ground coverage, but to me it reads that there is not extra ground coverage over the 10.5 inch coil.

I don't think the link worked on my previous post and i couldn't fix it, so here is a copy paste. Maybe i need to go back and look at the other links i posted to make sure they work.

Fisher CZ 10 1/2 coil versus Sunray FZ-12 Coil?

For those who have used both, which do you prefer? After having used the heavy CZ 10 1/2 coil, the depth increase seems to be no more than 1-2 inches deeper than the 8 inch which of course can make a huge difference to find a deep target along with the "wrap-around" effect for a masked target. Pinpointing is a bit different with the 10 1/2 CZ coil compared to the 8 and 5. I would think the FZ-12 would pinpoint better since it's concentric, would have similar target separation, and be a bit deeper since it's 2 inches larger. Thanks in advance,

Chris

You fellows that have both....a couple simple tests....wave a quarter in front of both on the same machine and you will see the 12.5 just excells by several inches, I know the 12.5 is big but coverage also excells. As far as pinpointing either will pinpoint well with a little practice. Remember coils may vary and these units are just for large fields or shore areas where coverage is critical. Reading some of the posts seems many are in the dark rel these two coils and not something I read in a book as I have used both but actually the stock 8 goes deep enough and really don't hunt in large fields or seashore areas to justify owning either..

A friend sent me this link:

http://www.sunraydetector.com/invader_fz-12_field_test_page.htm

Bill Ladd does a field test of the FZ and compares it to the 10.5''. Looks like the 12.5'' is slightly deeper. I would still like to test it myself, but i don't see any reason why the 12.5'' wouldn't go deeper. I wonder what kind of tests Tom did to arrive at his conclusion that they are the same.

I purchased that same 12.5 inch coil from bill ladd last year for my 3d but i never had time to use it yet to see what it will do.I'm sure this winter i will get to try it out.
