Fool's Gold

This morning I was starting to think about some long range plans for prospecting, (springtime) and my wife causally asked if my X-70 would detect, "fools gold". My answer was......Uhhhhh.

There was a rumor of gold where I have a summer place on the east coast and I have encountered a vein of quartz with weathered pyrite both in the vein and in the rock on either side of the vein. It gave false signals to a Bounty Hunter Sharpshooter. I have not gone back with the 70 but will next summer.

I suspect you will find lots of hots rocks in the right terrain. Just a hazard of prospecting.

Most people say that detectors can't identify Pyrite but it should be noted that Pyrite is often associated with gold, although it can indeed occur anywhere.

I just tested the X-Terra 70 with three Pyrite samples for you:

Australian Sample: (2 inches) - Mixed with a reddish non-iron ore. NO response from X-Terra 70.
Canadian Sample: (2 inches) - Beautiful bright metallic Pyrite crystals. NO response from X-Terra 70.
Chinese Sample: (2 inches) - Supposedly from a Gold Mine, this specimen is mottled in Quartz. NO response from X-Terra 70.
United States Sample: (MASSIVE) - Monster Grade A Specimen with massive inch wide cubic Pyrite crystals. NO response from X-Terra 70.

Apart from a barely noticeable rise in threshold pitch due to my hand (normal for an air test), the Pyrite specimens solicited no actual response from the X-Terra 70.

thanks bunches! intend to make the AZO outing Feb. 21-21 at Rich Hill. I thought about fools gold, and wondered if it would pick up. Taking xt-70 and 5x10 h.f. elip. coil. Can hardly wait till Feb.

Yes indeed thank you very much for the test. Now my wife will think I know everything:lol: NOT.
