Flying with the Excalibur?

Has anyone had experience traveling with their metal detector on an airline? I am planning a trip to Florida in the spring and would like to bring mine with me.

Call the airline to double check. You can take it in your carry on if you want. Only once did I have trouble coming back from one of the Caribbean Islands. They said that I couldn't bring batteries on the plane as a carry on and they confiscated them:ban: Good thing I didn't have an Excalibur at that time!

LIon batteries (Like those found in the White's TDI) are not allowed on passenger flights, but NiMH and NiCad should not be a problem.

Florida many times, done both..Carry on and checked....For me now the best is just to check my luggage, I can get everything in one suitcase...break down shaft made from 2 canes, 10 dollars Goodwill if I remember correctly. Bill Babbs 2 piece ElToro Travel Scoop..
When I would do carry on I would put the shaft, battery, scoop in my checked luggage, then the pod, coil, head phones in my carry on...

THAT'S why I copied OldBeechnut's cane shaft, so I could carry it on the plane. GREAT idea! Thanks so much. Do you have a link to that travel scoop?

No problem I carry on the control pod, coil and headphones. Check shaft and scoop in my large suitcase. RTG travel scoop works for me. By the way if you have the manual put it in with your carry-on just in case you run into a trainee. I fly several times a year with no problems. Florida honors most states carry permits also. I don't think BB does scoops anymore but one almost like it can be had from Rieliy's..6 in alum travel w/SS tip..very close to...

Just tell them you want a travel handle with a SS tip on the scoop

I've broken mine down and put in in a suitcase with some cloths but on the last few trips to Florida I have mailed it a few days before I leave and the place we stay puts it in my room the day I arrive. That way you don't have to sweat it out that the airline will damage it.

Great idea! We will be staying with family so that is the way to do it!

Personally I would be hesitant to use the mail it approach. First there is always a slight chance it could be lost or damaged in the mail and it will undoubtedly cost extra money to ship in that fashion. As another suggested why not take the coil, control pod, and battery in a carry on bag. This way you can make sure it is handled with care. Check your rod and scoop with your other luggage. Although one gotcha is that if they run out of overhead space before you stow it you may be forced to check it anyway. So pack it to withstand being checked just in case.

I fly to the Cayman Islands every year and have never had a problem. I alway carry-on the Excal and check my shaft and travel scoop.
