flying with detectors

Just looking for tips have never flown with detectors
any do's and dont's????
Are they safe in your baggage if you pack them right
Do they scan bags and then open them because they see strange looking equipment in there????

Thanks

I would suggest put the detector in your carry on, you know it will get there and it will be safe, and the shafts in your checked luggage as TSA may see the shafts as a weapon and not let you through with them.
I had my weight belt taken as they said I could use it as a weapon, I could swing it, I kept the belt and left the lead weights with them.
as for checked luggage they do scan it and if they see something they DO open it but they do put a form in it telling you they did open it.
Have a good trip Jim

When ever I fly I pack my detector and scoop in to my suitcase. I pack it in bubble wrap. It has made it on 12 flights no problems. My friend takes the manual to show what it is if he gets stopped which is a good idea. I never take it as carry on, my friend got stopped with his and they asked him loads of questions, plus if its on the way home and you've hot lts of old rings that are obviously not yours then what? That's why I put mine in the hold, so far no worries....

Hello there. No matter what method you employ to take your detector onto the aircraft you should ALWAYS carry the instruction manual with you in with all your holiday paperwork. If you are then, at any point, checked or questioned by officials who may not understand about the hobby of detecting you can show the manual. I have found that this saves all sorts of explanations far better than words ever do. Google luck and HH. Cheers, Mike.

I have flown with detectors on many occasions. I always take mine with me in a carry on small roller suitcase. Contrary to all the hype TSA people actually know what metal detectors are, and they can see through most anything you run through the xray machine. I have flown with rifles as well and never been questioned...and I fly regularly so this isnt a guess its facts based on what I have seen. You are more likely to get stopped if you are a 75 year old with a hip replacement than you are with a detector...seriously I see it every week.

Remove the batteries from your detector and pin pointer too. I put shafts and coil in checked luggage and control box in carry on. with no problems.
