Flying with detector and scoop

On an upcoming flight to the gulf coast I was planning on putting my scoop and detector, broken down, in a duffel and carrying it on the plane. It all would fit in the requisite max 9.5" x 15.5" x 24" bag. My worry is the security people might see the scoop handle, 20", as a bat like weapon. Does anyone have experience going thru baggage check with this gear?
Of course, I could pack it all in my golf bag tote and check it, but I hate checking stuff I absolutely have to have on the day of arrival.
Your comments are welcome and I am grateful for the help.

I've had detectors in carry on with no problem but have always put the scoop in the checked bag due to size.
Good luck on your trip!

Here is what I do if I fly to hunt.

Send it to the destination, hotel or motel via Fedex. It will be insured and will be there when you get there. Just make sure that you pack it well and make sure it is insured. Fedex is probably better than UPS as far as making sure that the packages are not damaged. I have heard horror stories about UPS packages that were destroyed. Plus if it is not there on time, Fedex shipping will be free. I've done that several times and it is nice not having to worry about the Transportation Suppression Administration....(TSA).

I tried flying with my detector and sand scoop as carry on and was treated like a criminal. The scoop was a three piece and fit nicely into a duffel bag. So I try not to fly as much as possible. But when I do to hunt, then I use Fedex.
