Flying Eagle Cent found today.

My detecting buddy and I got out today for about 4 hours in the heat and hunted a couple yards in the country. Both houses were old 2 story homes that dated from around the 1880's. The first yard was pretty good sized and the ground had alot of sand mixed in the dirt and was easy digging. It looked like we might find a few goodies here.

My buddy is new to detecting, I sold him a brand new Fisher 1236-x2 about 3 months ago. Within the first week he had found his first big silver, an 1896 Morgan dollar in a park that has been hunted hard for years. I have been hunting for 30 years and never found a silver dollar. Today my buddy found another hard to find coin, an 1858 Flying Eagle Cent,
another coin I have never found in 30 years of digging. It was kind of funny because he didn't know what the coin was. I keep telling him he is going to dig a gold coin one of these days with the luck he has been having. My finds for the day was a 1943 mercury dime, 4 wheaties in the early 40's, a couple clad dimes and a plated wedding ring type band.
my buddy ended up with the flying eagle cent, a couple wheaties, and some clad coins. I was surprised to see the flying eagle come out of the ground looking gray like a nickel without a spot of green patination. Happy Hunting..................Roger

It wasn't Gray looking but it didn't look like you would expect a grounded coin to look like either.. it was well preserved.. LOL I looked for hours hoping to find it's mate..but it was not to be..

Elton, This was only the 2nd Flying Eagle cent I have seen found in all the years I have been detecting. The Flying Eagle cent was called the "white" cent according to my coin book because of the 12% nickel it contained. My buddies coin looked the color of a nickel, no patination at all like the Indian head pennies we find. I didn't have my digital cam with me today but I will get a pic of his find to post. The coin didn't have much detail left but still was a cool find. I was using my cz5 today and after he found the coin I was digging all the square tab hits I got, but like you , it wasn't meant to be. This does make me wonder how many of these type coins I would be digging if I was using a cz3d where it would hit high tone instead of mid tone. happy hunting............Roger

WELL YOUR FIRST MISTAKE WAS SELLING HIM YOUR 1236X2 ! AWSOME DETECTOR

Woodchuck, I sold the 1236x-2 to buy a like new cz5 I ran across just after buying the 1236x-2. I have a new hunting partner along with new sites to hunt, so it was worth selling the 1236x-2. Besides, I can always buy another 1236 later..........happy hunting...........Roger

Here is the 1858 Flying Eagle cent my buddy found sunday with his Fisher 1236x-2 at about 5 inches deep. The coins details aren't real sharp, but still a hard to find coin that doesn't show up very often...................Roger
