Flower Power...

Way back in 1974, my Daddy was in the "flower mode". We not only had a large yard filled with beautiful Iris, but had a large assortment of other species planted about on the old home place. There were lillies, azaleas, daffodils, roses, dahlias, etc, etc
Daddy always went all out whenever he did anything and his flowers were no exception. Inside the house he had an African Violet that he had given to my cousins sife, Young Ja. She is a Korean woman who had married my cousin Gary in the 60's while in the service. She nourished the violet well through out the years.
On one of John-boys trips to visit my uncle, Gary's Daddy, he was given a piece his violet for his very own. A little bit of what his Daddy had given to this family so long ago.
This past Christmas John gave Linda and myself a "piece" of the violet to enjoy.
Here we are, 31 years later. I thought that I would share this story with you guys while the violet was in bloom. I hope one day to give pieces to my own kids to enjoy for another 31 years!
Peace and Love,

I thought this story was going to be about Linda and her volkswagen beetle. <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

That you could keep it alive for 31 years and get other starts from the original plant. My wife loves flowers but has never had much luck with violets....seldom do they live 31 days!

Post a picture and the story of your mothers plant, that your son-in-law brought to your house when I was there. That amazed me!!
I never dreamed they could live that long!!

[I guess I still need some lessons}.
However, this is a Hoya Plant that my mother started, oh so many years ago. Let see, I am 58, plus some odd months now and she died when I was 14 so this plant is at least 44 years old.
After my mother died, My father had the plant and cared for it. When he died I took it over.
I was a little afraid since I am renowned for having a brown thumb but a Hoya is one of the few plants that seems to thrive on abuse.
The plant lived at out home in Victoria while we were there. When we moved up to Edgewood, the Hoya stayed in Victoria and we long distance cared for it. Finally, we felt that we had the place more or less in order and so we had our son-in-law bring it up in the front of the horse trailer.
If you have never seen, or better yet, smelled a hoya in bloom, you are missing one of the most beautiful of plants. The whole plant is covered with tint, pinkish flowers and the aroma is so sweet!!! There is really no way to describe that odour. The flowers weep a very sweet sap that tastes as good as the plant smells.
Every time that it blooms, it brings back memories of my mother..... and makes my life just a wee bit more enjoyable than it alteady is.
All the best
