Florida's metal detecting laws?

King Ranch

New member
Does florida have a fifty year law on coins? Let's say i dig a hole, and in that hole is a 1956 wheat and a 1958 wheat. Can i keep both coins or just the 1958 wheat because it's not more then fifty years old?

I believe coins are legal tender and therefore legal to detect. Relics are a different matter.

I have posted this info before. Florida has such a law. If you find an old coin over fifty years old and keep it , it is a misdeaminor. If you give the coin to someone else., such as your grandson, or trade or sell it, ITS A FELONY. Artifact hunters have been fighting this one for four years after the State of Florida rescinded the ISOLATED FINDS provision of Florida law that regulates recovering artifacts and historical relics and coins from state land, waters, and streams. If you find it on private property your ok. THAT too may change. Don , Navarre Fla

Wow, that law belongs with "no spitting on the sidewalk". Even more reason to keep your trap shut about what you find I guess. I was born and raised in Florida, I guess if I go back there I should have several hundred arrest warrants outstanding and half the population is going to be locked up.

Hey Don, take a look at this site i found. www.atochatreasures.com/edperry.htm This guy is from the Mclarty treasure museum, he is a park service apicialist. This is the same guy that was on, the best way to find cash and treasure show. Did he break the law?
