Florida beach/surf MD laws??

New member
Hey all you Florida beach/surf combers, can someone please tell me the law(s), or tell me where I can read for myself the laws/regulations/ordinances etc,, of MD'ing on Florida's salt beaches and surf? I am not asking this without doing research first, but have only ran into mixed reviews and legal jargon that only gave me a neckache trying to decipher.

Is there an official answer out there that can inform me and possibly officer friendly? I know there are public beaches, state park beaches, small islands off the coasts or in bays, federal beaches?, fresh water beaches, lakes, rivers, springs and probably some I have not listed here.

I am new to this hobby and would really like to know THE law/laws without having to call attys, city mayors, public officials etc etc. . Nothing would tick me off more while vacationing to the beach with new MD in hand, and taking a ration of S'''' . getting fined or slapped in the pokey because I did not know what I was getting into. If anyone can please set me,and I'm sure manyothers, straight on this subject, it would be a great addtion to this forum. Also, was curious about other states and their beach/ water laws too, but I do not want to push my luck. However, if anyone knows and wants to contribute, it would be greatly appreciated. I definitely want to follow the moral rules of conduct while learning to MD and most definitely the LEGAL ones too. Thanks:unsure:

Without knowing exactly where you are going it's impossible to say for sure, but there are two things that are for sure; Federal parks (NWR/ Nat Seashore etc) are off limits as is the water in the area of the 1715 fleet wrecks as the leases for the water are held by the Fisher Salvage group.

Better make it 3 things..... any private property.....

I MD at all public beaches and in some parks. I do call the non beach parks ahead to make sure I can dig. If you are MD in Indian River county, you CAN NOT MD in the water. You can on the beaches though. I have known people to get kicked out of Indian River county shores and lagoons. The Fishers seem to own every inch of water because of the shipwrecks.

The beaches are good to go, as long as you don't disrupt the sand dunes. On Anastasia State Park Beach "Use of metal detectors, magnetometers or other metal detecting devices is prohibited on all state park lands, including sovereign submerged lands under lease by state parks, except for the following:
(1) Coastal parks, in a zone between the waterline and toe of the dune, as determined by the Park Manager. Just no water detecting on the State Park.

St Augustine Beach City even has metal detectors for rent, from Big Bill's shop.
