Floating sifter - making of

sdesic

New member
I have made test (barely) floating sifter for next season.
Pipes are 20mm - 50 cm in lenght.
Floating nudles are temperature insulation for pipes.
Mash is plastic - used in construction.

Here are few pictures from making of floating sifter.

Looks good. If you want more flotation, they do make the pipe insulation in larger sizes, tho you may have to hunt around for it. Let us know how well that plastic wears.

I don't know how much rock will be in sifter but I must get more flotation stuff.
This is one I had on hand ... 2 m

Must try with one more stick as it sits low in water ...
all pebbles are under water now.

Looks good just needs a little more buoyance

You need to buy "noodles", the long floaties they sell for swimming pools. Try wallmart. If I ever need a floating sifter, I have an old boogie board that I'd cut a hole out in the center. So far, I just havent seen a need for one.

I am in Europe - Bosnia and Herzegovina... so no Wallmart
I had this one ... so I tried eith it ... not much pool equipment around to buy

My new lake is with rocks .. lots of mud and clay

I doubled amount of floatation... need to try it on water
salt water test - fresh water test
I think it will sink more in fresh water...

I'm thinking about trying some 2 or 3" thin-wall PVC pipe. Or maybe ABS pipe? Would be a good winter project.

You could be going to heavy and cumbersum for floatation value . 1 " pvc + pool floaty better weight to floatation form.

I've posted successfully used variations of this sifter for years. Heavy duty and holds lotsa stone etc. yet sifts sand well

I stopped using the smaller green one as it proved unnecessary.

No metal parts in the sifter body for ease in using a pin-pointer or the detector's coil for locating tiny bits of metal such as staples, BBs and screw heads.

Not trying to hijack your post, but looking to share info.

You may be right. I am going to build a test loop, though, just to find out. I just don't like the noodles. However, I might use a noodle inside of the glued loop.

I don't want to Rob Your Post, But I made this one about 3 Years ago from a Plastic Coca Cola Crate and the Swim Noodles. It's lite weight and I carry it on my back going to the water. Also added a cord to let it float away when water Detecting. goldnugget--Charlotte,N.C. U S A

Your pipes are too small and the length is too long. try something closer to 60mm pipes and 25cm long. It has to be able to stay afloat after you dump a big pile of sand, mud, and gravel into it, before everything sifts through.
