Flat Copper Button with .12. on it...?

I am not a relic hunter, but I found this copper flat button in an area that dates back to the early 1800's. I could not find it in any searches, so I'm hoping someone can shed some light on it's use. About the size of a new penny, it appears to have a .12. on the face. The post shank is flat and a bit wider than the hole in the shank.

Any info or direction would be helpful.
