flat buttons

Good job. I dig them frequently also. The only way to date them is by the backmark. However, the style of button sometimes helsp. The best source for dating them is the book: Dating Buttons by Warren K. Tice.

Another way to try and date them is to see what else you found there. If everything is around say 1850, then a good chance that the buttons are from that era also. This works if the site was not popular for a long period of time, say 1770 -1930. Back marks still are the best way to go though.

some of the buttons have extrafine quality, some have just an eagle with stars on the backs, some say extra colour and the other ones say imperial standard all of these buttons were found in about a 40 yard area on a hill next to a fresh water spring also found 2 pieces of silver cut money.

That's a lot, i found 5 flat bottons saturday close to Sharpsburg, same kinda of place , a hill close to a old spring dating back to around 1700's.
