fixed ground balance questions

I have a Vaquero with manual GB. Sometimes I get false signaling in discriminate, and when I switch it to all metal the ground is "nulled" , I think that is the proper terminology . I balance it in neutral but the mineralization changes . There are times I hit all metal and listen for the null signal just to make sure its not to far negative.

So heres the question. Will a fixed GB machine like a silver Umax , give false readings in areas where it is to far negative? I can adjust the Vaquero back to neutral but not the Silver. Is a machine like the Silver set more positive to prevent falsing ?

I live in Northern missouri where the soil is not heavily mineralized but it does change quickly in areas.

A couple of friends want to get into detecting and I would like to get a silver myself.

My ground is mild and I own a Silver. I don't know for sure if it is set slightly positive or not, but assume it is and I get no falsing. I do get partially discriminated pops and clicks in a trashy area. When I use the Tiger or Tejon from one spot to another 30 miles away I get very little if any variance in ground balance. I very rarely have to adjust either and when I do it is only a fine amount. For me in my ground the Silver has been a money maker. In fact I think Tesoro should change the name from Silver uMax to Money Maker! The Silver is very effective with excellent disc. up to it's depth limit which I find to about 7" in my soil. Maybe a decent whisper if the soil was moist and conditions were right at 8", maybe. There are deeper detectors no doubt, but within it's depth range it is a great detector. I would love to try a Deleon or Cibola someday also, but quite frankly don't see that happening any time soon because I have been focusing on water hunting with the Tiger. In opinion the Tiger is like a Silver on steroids with a ground balance.

If your soil conditions permit, the Silver in my opinion would be a great budget minded detector for someone starting. I can't comment on any of the competitors with displays in that price range because I have not used them. I however do believe that beep and dig has a lot merits for teaching somebody who is new. It focuses them on the importance of audio responses. Just my opinion, right or wrong.

My opinion is that fixed ground balance units are set at the factory to perform in the various soils it may encounter around the globe. Like Hatpin I like to run my ground balance neutral or a bit positive with a manual unit and here my ground is mild but it does change just a small bit from site to site. We are hearing that ground balance change because we are adjusting our ground balance neutral. A fixed ground balance unit would have no problem performing here.
