What is the difference between the CZ-21 and the 1280-X ? Is the difference great enough to spend the extra $300.- If I buy the CZ 21 then what do I buy for headphones?

The headphones come with the CZ-21 and are hardwired in. I believe that it is a better machine than the 1280X, although I have not used a 1280X. It's a VLF machine and supposedly goes deeper. It has 3 tones for item identification. That means you can waste less time digging up trash. I had a similar machine, the CZ-20 a couple of years ago and it paid for itself in a little over a week. I now have a CZ-21 but have not been able to give it a good try out yet. I believe that it is worth the extra $300. Hopefully you will be able to get more info from other forum members who have used both.

1280X:
Single frequency VLF TR motion/discrimate detector
Increasing Disc decreases depth
No pinpoint mode
Coil and Headphones are hard-wired to the control-box
Automatically tunes out ground minerals
From what I've heard, is a little "chattery" on wet salt sand and in shallow salt water
not sure on the batteries
No Tone-ID (unless you get really used to the sound, some folks say they can tell the difference between targets with the older dial-discriminators)

CZ-21
Dual Frequency VLF TR motion/discriminate detector, operating on 5 and 15 KHz
Auto-Tune Mode as well as Discriminate modes
Increasing Disc DOES NOT decrease detection depth
Permanently locked into SALT mode
Pinpoint Mode
Coil and Headphones are hard-wired to the control-box
Must be Ground-balanced by user
Uses 4 9v batteries
3 Tone-ID, Low = Iron, Mid = Foil, both tabs, and most gold, High = Nickels, zinc cents, and "high coins", silver, and some larger and/or higher-carat gold
No "Notch" Disc

I've never used a 1280X, but I hear that they're basically a 1235X in a waterproof box. I have a CZ-20, which is basically the same as a CZ-21, but the pinpoint switch is different. FWIW, I don't use the pinpoint switch for anything, as I pinpoint with a modified "X" style pinpoint in the water. I've used a CZ-5 for several years before I got my CZ-20. The CZ-20 and CZ-21, from what I've heard, is basically a CZ-5 in a waterproof box, but without a meter. Since I was so familar with the CZ-5, using a CZ-20 was a "no-brainer" for me.

iv owned 5 1280X 's 1 CZ20 and now have a CZ21..1280's are good fresh water detectors, built like a tank.but will not work well in salt water or wet salt sand.they will go crazy, falseing very bad.they have a auto ground ballance that is hit and miss as far as being ballanced right for the conditions. the CZ21 has manual GB that you can adjust for your ground conditions and that will get you more depth.it also is built like a tank, and has 3 Tone Target ID.that will help tell you what the item is before you dig it.and it works well in salt water or fresh water or on land.

I was told that the 1280X is not a standard VLF or PI machine. It's a VF-Search (quartz crystal controlled) and runs at 2.4 KHZ.

This is the same design and working frequency as the DetectorPro Headhunter Diver model.

Thanks and HH!!!

Hey irishmik54,
If you're going to be doing the bulk of your hunting IN saltwater go with the CZ21. If you want an all around detector get a 1280X. I have one I have been using since Nov. '07 and I love it. It has an internal factory set ground balance and the setting may not be right for your area but that is adjustable, you can do it your self but it voids your warranty or you can send it in for service. I called about this adjustment specifically and after telling the tech what settings I am able to attain he said, send it in that machine can do better and everything is covered under the warranty. Go to the Fisher site for the specs on the 1280X and look around for the specs on the CZ21 some of the info in the other posts here are wrong. Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I ordered my CZ21.....now if it would just get out of the teen's long enough to get in the water......

Good luck with the new machine, don't worry about it being in the teens, if you get yours in half the time that Gulf Hunter has had to wait it will be plenty warm when you get yours, you may want to pick up a used 1280X to hold you over.
