Howdy fromNW florida or LA (lower alabama) Was wondering if any of you have ever owned one of these. My neighbor bought this at an estate sale for 20 bucks, so I gave him his money back on it . It does turn on, but I cant get any depth out of it, I have tried a lot of the settings , but not much on depth change. New batteries to . I think the switches really needs to be cleaned , I opened the control box up and the inside looks clean except for the control knobs look dusty . The detector looks like it has been takin care of . Anyway it looks like old school . I ve been metal detecting for 4 months now , but I coudn't pass this up I bought it for a wall hanger , but I would love to see it operate better. Any suggestions Thanks for looking.....

Go to Treasurelinx.com and you will find a copy of the manual for this detector. I had one new way back when and they are plenty deep if set up right. A very, smooth stable machine. A little heavy compared to todays models but still very capable. If you decide to sell it, let me know.

It's one of the best Fishers made anyone who owned one will tell you. Hot on silver and extremely deep in VLF mode.
Bet you some new machines of today would be put to shame if hunting side by side in VLF mode.
It is a heavy beast and built like a tank. Fisher does not have any replacement parts.
If you get one working that's super, also makes a nice wall hanger.
I wouldn't mind owning another 555 myself even if not working.
But, don't really want to start a collection so I have to keep the herd trimmed down.

Make sure you have the correct battery holders per owners manual from my website (link in last post).
9 volt replacements work in a pinch but, not very well. Some of the units also have a spot on the board for 1 AA
battery.

Now I will let the cat out of the bag, many old detectors out there won't work when you get them. Many times it comes
down to being a bad pot (control). Which may not be bad at all. Many detectors spring to life after you spray the inside of the pots and switches with

This stuff has been used by Ham operators and electronic repairmen for years and years.

Okay thanks for the information and links. Someone has converted it to 2, 9 volt batteries, but what amazes me is the good shape it is in, and the search coil, which is 8 inch s round and reads 555-d series and no scratches on the bottom , looks new and original.I love the colors of the control box , red , gold, blue, brown trim. Needs to be more detectors sold today with colors like this one . Again thanks for the information

It probably hasn't been converted to nine volt batteries as the snap on connectors also are the same for the original AA battery packs. The battery packs have the same snap on setup as a nine volt battery. Some Garretts of that era used the same battery pack and are still available from Garrett.

Yes , AH HA I gotcha , thanks for bringing that to my attention. The original battery packs are still inside
