:fisher: Up date on using BH coils on the F5 :nopity:

Mr.Bill

New member
There is about a 25% loss in depth over the stock coil supplied with the F5, when using the 10" Bounty Hunter coil.

On a US Dime, I got about 7" to 8" using the 10' BH coil. Using the F5 factory supplied coil I got 11"+ on a dime. :clapping:

I didn't bother actually measurements with the other BH coils. I'm sure the results will be the same. It looks like in a pinch one could use them, but there will be a performance drop doing so.

On the (+) plus side, the F5 does everything it should quite well. It's a nice, lightweight, well balanced, high performance metal detector.

I have a 4 inch coming and I don't need depth lets see if you can push the F5 on the 4 inch for more depth. And then I will get a target on the F75 and see if the 4 inch can see it.

That was my thoughts also that the 4" would allow the ability to hunt real heavy trash where masking was more of the culprit than the depth. Keep us informed.

Linda used our F5 last weekend at a local comp hunt. The first hunt..she used the F5.....and got 43 targets. The second hunt she used her X3.....and got 28 targets. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....
this is the first time we have used the 5 at anything other than a regular hunt..and it did quite well!!! Streak!

A coil is nothing more then an antena so as long as the antena resonates at the same freq. that you detector operates at their should not be any problem. This is why want to find some other detectors that operate at or near 4.2Khz. I do not care what brand their are I just want more coil selection for my kids Fisher 1212X. It would be too easy to add a conector to make coil changes a snap. I have also considered trying to find someone that has built a search coil so I can learn how they are feed and loaded. I used to build my own antena's when I was into amature radio so this is just more of the same. I might just build my own. So anyone with any good sites that show how to build search coils do pass the information on to me! Thanks!

one of the reasons coils are so expensive is that that they are labor intensive to build and tune. Get one thing a little bit off (even the symmetry is critical) and performance suffers. I'm not doubting your ability to build one....but you may have to build a couple dozen before you get one that actually performs. I'm fairly well versed on coil dynamics.....but wouldnt even TRY to build one myself.........
Good luck!!!!! Streak!

Piece of cake!!! Coplanar coil is the easiest type to make. I think the most important thing is to think through your jig very well so that it makes life easy and consistent for you. I think many people make a lot of it so that most are discouraged from building their own coils as they are a huge money maker. SOme companies rape their owners big time. BH though seems to offer their coils at a very resoanable price. Some companies play so really silly games with how tey price their coils. When you stop and think about it the first coils where all hand made. Today very few are hand made most are machine made. Machines are more consistent and faster. Plus if the transmitter section is designed properly you can have some varrainance and have it adapt enough to not have to have constant or precise tuning. You would think that in order to get cost down through automated construction they metal detector companies would build in a limted antena tuner circuit to take into account the most drastic variance that one would see under normal production. I am guessing that BH does this and that is why their coil cost is so much lower. On the other hand I have read threads on here where various Tesoro's had to have their unit and coil re-calabrated wich to me means that if their is a circuit inside it is not automatic and someone has to manual adjust the electronics to the coil. In my mind that is not the best way od doing things.

Actually not that hard. You will find a lot of hand made coils on wooden boards in Eastern Europe and Russia. Also there used to be several kits offered that included the coil plans. The hard part is getting fancy.

William, send me a PM with your email addy and I'll send you some kit plans that will help you with the coil building.

I have a F-5 plus the F-70 and the F-75 and was going to try the F-70 at a hunt next weekend, but maybe the F-5 maybe better. I know I tried a F-4 at a hunt and it did real good, better then my F-75 would and no real chatter from other detectors with the F-4 either, so I hope the F-5 will be as good as I think that is what I should use.

Rick, I have used my F 75 on two club hunts and I had no problems what so ever. There were even two other F 75's in the competition and none of us had problems, at least that I heard them mention. I honestly didn't pay that much attention ( I was swinging fast and furious:detecting:) as to how close to each other we may have gotten, but again, no problems. The F 5 or F 70 with their coils, though, may be a better, as pinpointing with the F 75's stock DD coil does tend to slow ME down a tad. HH jim tn

BH 4" coil = 4" on a dime in discriminate, 5" on a quarter. We can go a tad more in all metal.

The phase reading using ferrite to balance the detector was #92. Hey maybe it will work OK for you in your conditions. If it doesn't, you haven't loss much. 4" BH coils are not expensive.

I just got that coil and the F5 and am going to give them a try. I just need a small coil for the trash and iron. It amy pan out the F5 is a great little brother to the F75 after all I will give it a big test this Sat in Calif!

anybody with a bit of electrical experience can buid a coil that works.................................but.......................I'n not too sure I'd want to be out in the field swinging a wooden coil. Probably would drift like crazy..........obviously not be waterproof........and would likely weigh a ton. Performance would probably be fair to middling at BEST too. I'll spend the bux and let the professionals do it for me. I'd rather spend MY time swinging!! Streak!
