Fisher Impulse repair?

Skimmer

New member
Hi- I have an "old faithful" Fisher Impulse that is suddenly emitting a constant tone whenever it is activated. Fisher no longer repairs these, or so I understand. Is there an alternate, reputable repair person or place anyone knows of? Any help is appreciated, I really like my Impulse for underwater use here in Florida. Thanks, Mike

Hello all- I'm in east central FL....anyone have any ideas who can operate on and reseal my good 'ol Impulse? It's warm water hunting season and I'd love to get me and my detector wet! Thanks, Mike

If it's just the battery compartment that is leaking... you can repair it yourself by replacing the cover gasket. Just pick up a gasket from KellyCo, apply some silicon grease and you should be good to go.

Hi- Thanks for the reply....I can't see any evidence of a leak, no visible corrosion in battery compartment, I have not attempted to open the main part of the unit for fear I won't get it properly sealed again. It just squeals constantly when activated. I need someone to check out and repair the short or whatever it is and reseal it properly, and I don't feel I can diagnose the problem myself.
For all I know the problem may lie in the loop or the connections...maybe it doesn't need to be opened. Thanks, Mike

Out of curiosity... do you have a coil cover on your search coil?

If so, there's a possibility that you may have collected some metallic debris in between the coil cover and search coil causing the detector to sound off.

Hi- No coil cover...wish it as that simple.
I'm pretty sure something is shorted 'cause the constant "hit" tone doesnt change no matter what I do (adjustments, pulling on headphone and/or loop connections, changing batteries, etc).....Pretty sure it's in main case which I'd be lost looking in anyway, even if I could get it properly resealed. Um, turning the volume knob changes the loudness, but turning the sensitivity knob changes nothing, it just screams. Must be a short, right? I need to take it or mail it to a good technician...anyone know sombody?
Thanks, Mike

Contact Bill Crabtree at Surfscanner Electronics. If he can't fix it himself, he may know someone who can.

Skimmer,

I just thought of a name out of the past. Try Jim Pugh... Jim used to service Fisher water detectors and then went on to make his well known Anchor Electronics Barracuda pulse detector. While he doesn't make the Barracuda detector any more... he may still do repairs. I believe he occasionally frequents the forums... unfortunately I can remember his forum name... maybe one of the forum members can????

Maybe if Jim reads this he'll jump in and answer???
