hello, just got my new id-excel and have tried it for the first time and im not sure how i like the numbers thing. thay seem to jump alot is this normal.like from positive numbers to negative numbers as i swing.now if theres alot of junk in the ground will this cause it to happen around a good signal?well i seem to like my vdi needle type whites 5900 coinmaster detector it was old so i upgraded i hope i did the right thing.any imput will help thanks paul

sounds like your sens needs to be backed down a bit, the Excel is a HOT machine , give it a try <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D">

until you get used to it, the more trash the worse it will be. Like Bugar said, back off on the sensativity to around 4 or 5 and see how that works for you. If you prefer analog display, the CZ5 is one of the best machines, but small, light digital, ID excel is a good one to.

thank you for the imput bugar i have only operated the machine on the factory settings.but im sure i will do better the more i use it.but i seem to like the needle indicator on my whites 5900 coinmaster but like i said it is old.also will i get the same results as i did with the older whites as far as depth and discrimination.well thanks agane.paul

thank you mtdoramike for your feed back it is help full i will check out the cz-5 option also.i might look into trades or somthing but i will give the id excel more time maybe thats all i need to master it .thanks agane paul

Paul,
I think that going from the analog Whites, which is an excellent meter system by the way, to the digital display of the Excel may just take a little time to get used to. Personally I find the ID Excel to be very stable. The display of target ID's below the disc setting may be confusing at first, but once you get used to it you will even find it useful.
One thing to remember, is the sweep speed difference of the two machines. In relatively trash free areas the Excel can be swept at a moderately fast pace(similar to but not as fast as your white's) however in heavy concentrations of trash you do have to slow down so that the individual target responses become distinct to you ears. As far as picking stuff out of heavy trash goes, experiment using different sweeps speeds over the suspect target and using short vs wide sweeps once you think you have it centered. You will quickly learn how to get the most out of it, which is a lot IMHO.

thank you tom for your imput it is very helpfull i will keep pluggyn away im sure i will find more than zinc pennys i noticed with them the detector locks right on target so that should happen with other targets?and also i had a deep target at like +29-+30 high tone but alittle beep but when i changed derection with the coil i got no signal what does that mean?so i moved on.im going back for a few hours today i hope so i will try that spot agan.thanks paul

Paul,
The Excel locks on pretty well even on the deep ones but as you know there are a lot of factors that can throw the ID off and depth is only one of them. On those one way (back & forth )signals, if they repeat in the same spot I dig em if I feel iron is not the cause.
HH Tom

Paul,
I don't have an ID Excel but I do have the CoinStrike. Pay more attention to the sounds more than the numbers. When you come across something that sounds good then watch the meter. Generally a good target will be close in numbers checking from different directions.
This weekend Tom & I were hunting an old fairground that had a lot of tiny 22 shells. The numbers would bounce around from 6 to 20. We had a good idea they were 22 shells but we still dug any targets that stayed positive. Coins mostly lock right on and only bounce a couple numbers.

thanks rick for the advice i went out today and found $3.50 in modern change all in quarters-dimes and pennys is there some sort of tone plus numbers for nickels i think im missing some i got so many signals that where in the posative numbers and different tones also.i did tape the numbers for good objects i found on the treasure web sight but it doesnt have anything on the different tones could you or anyone have anything on this.thanks paul

The sounds are harder to distinguish in these detectors. Kind of like an Explorer. Notch out foil, that might help. Don't turn on Auto Track.
Rick

I don't think there is any <span style="background-color:#ffff00;">notch</span> or <span style="background-color:#ffff00;">auto tracking</span> with the ID-Excel, unless I missed something.

Paul,
You might want to go back and re-read page 5 of the manual. There is an excellent explanation of the discriminator and associated tones.
Hope this helps, and good hunting,

Hi Otto,
I didn't know if it had one or not. I was referring to my C$. With the ID Excel I guess you just set the disc lvl. Thanks for pointing that out Otto.
Rick

I hadn't used the Excel in awhile and couldn't remember either. Had to go look at the manual. <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
One thing I really like about it is the ability to turn the disc all the way down to -36, and have the four tone id essentially in an all-metal mode.
Good Hunting,

I forget to utilize that -36 myself & usually just have it at disc 0 to dig all my positives.....thanks for bringing that up.
