Fisher Id Edge

I just purchased an Edge from Mr. Bill and was curious what some good starting settings would be. I have used the Coinstrike for years and should be ok if the Edge is similar to that. Also, I have read that the volume is bad on the Edge and requires headphones? That's unfortunate if true as I hate wearing headphones while detecting. I'm also going to assume that the Edge is a fast sweep machine?

The Edge is very similar to the C$. The speaker volume is hard to hear, not loud like the C$, need phones for sure. I have two cheap phones and Killer B's. They all work very well with the Edge.

Yes I noticed the speaker volume is very hard to hear on deep signals. I am curious wjat would be some good settings to use in an old campground. It is full of rusty crown caps and pull tabs but also has some very old coins. Would using the "Old Coins" program work alright or should I just use a custom program where I can hear all the iron. If I understand discrimination correctly in a trashy area it might be better to hear all of the iron rather than null it out by having the disc up?

Jason, I can't help you with trashy areas, I usually avoid those places, they are tough to search. But sometimes I run into trashy spots. I never used any of the programs and I don't Disc out any iron, I would rather to hear it all. Old Coins program might be the way to go, I'll have to try it sometime. A lot of times old rusty iron will give a low/high tone signal and sometimes when a coin is close to iron will give the same low/high tone signal, hard to tell them apart. Last week I ran into a small trashy area and dug up an Indian head penny and later a Chinese cash coin. I was able to zero in on them with very short sweeps when I heard the high tone. There was trash real close to those coins but the very short sweeps sounded good from several directions.

So you just manually turn your disc down to the lowest possible setting? Which is -36 I think? This isn't my favorite area to hunt either but we pulled a lot of silver out of it last year and I know there's more to be found. It was originally a missionary area in the 1600's so I think it's a good area.

Sounds like a great place but real hard to search. They say a smaller coil is better in trash but with short sweeps (2"-3" sweeps) over any high tones the 8" coil can zero in. I keep the Iron disc set so that I can hear all of the iron because some iron will give two tones - low/high and I want to hear the low tone too so that I know that iron is under the coil. Try breaking the soil with your digger (to break up any iron halo) and then sweep the coil again to see if the high tone goes away or becomes a low tone. If its iron the signal will change.

I have an Edge and use it in an old campground a lot. I don't use headphones but know I should. Good deep machine and I find silver. Yesterday two 53 rosies and a 35 Washingtron. The volume is turned up all the way. I use a 10.5" coil I bought from Mr. Bill. The 8" is retired.

Where you at in Michigan Jason? I am in Port Huron.
