FIsher Gold Bug DP PRO

Not a perfect park machine, but it does a pretty good job, and I like it. If you want to cherry pick just coins, set your disc at "57," then dig any 57,58,59 (possible nickels), and then anything about 75 and up...

OR, you could set your disc at about 75-ish -- somewhere around that value (forget exactly what it is) sets your low-end "iron grunt" level at 57 or 58. Then, you can dig any grunt that's a 58-ish IDy9o (nickels), plus any "high tone" (above your disc set point). It's a pretty good machine set up this way...and does a nice job on coins. Your biggest problem set up this way will be aluminum bottle caps (Bud Light-type screw caps) -- which will sound and ID alot like quarters. You will also miss the smaller gold rings, which can hit as low as the low 40s or so. Otherwise, this type of disc setting makes for a pretty effective coin shooter.

If you don't follow what I'm saying about the "disc set point" and the associated tones, let me know and I'll explain it in more detail.

Coilfisher,

That was some sound advice, but I've got a feeling you are looking at this detector because you want to find small gold chains and other forms of jewelry, correct? Forgive me if I'm wrong and you can disregard everything below..

The Gold Bug Pro DP will do just fine on coins as long as they aren't deeper than about 6" (more or less depending on soil conditons).

But in researching this, I think the Gold Bug Pro with the standard 5" coil is probably a better bet for park hunting as it really helps to navigate the trash much better than the 11" will. If you want a bigger coil to go with it, the 5x10" elliptical coil seems to be the way to go. Users seem to much prefer it over the 11" coil and there are several YouTube posts that show it detects smaller gold deeper than the 11".

Now here is where I have to give you a word of warning. The GB/G2 line does an excellent job of knocking out iron, but these detectors absolutely love low conductivity targets like gold, aluminum, and tin. And bottlecaps. Good heavens they LOVE the bottlacaps. So if there is a lot of this trash in the ground, be prepared to do a lot of digging of very small bits of trash like can slaw, tin foil and the like. I must emphasize: A LOT OF IT! The very jumpy target ids most people discard as junk, but you probably won't get many of those. You will get some very solid VDI numbers.

This machines locks on to metal like nobody's business and you are going to need a good pair of knee pads as you will be on them a lot.

This detector will pick up on small and micro jewlery better than any machine on the market (yes, I know I'm throwing a gauntlet down here, sorry. :)). But you are really going to have earn it by digging lots of junk.

I think this is part of the reason way it was made for nugget hunting and relic hunters like it so much (as there tends to be less junk in relic territory), but not necessarily emphasized so much for park applications. It's hard to cherrypick with this detector because bottlecaps will ring in as quarters, etc.

Having said all that, I have always been a firm believer that the detectorist who digs more finds more of the good stuff. And this detector will help you do just that. But you must have the right mind set otherwise you will get frustrated very quickly.

Did all that rambling help?

Smudge -- very good point, on thinking the OP may have intended to hunt jewelry. When I saw "park," my mind immediately assumed the OP wanted to "coin hunt," but you may have been exactly right. Thanks for adding the additional detail, as it relates to jewelry hunting!

I totally agree and if coins are what you want to cherry pick you have to deal with bottle caps! But if your shooting for gold in the parks why dig coins and deal with bottle caps. Spend all your time looking for the big ticket items. Even if you hit a nice silver dime or quarter their cool finds but not going to add up to fast. Gold targets are few and far between but one or two can pay for your detector.
The only time I dig clad signals any more is when they are for sure and im bored. I prefer zinc signals and just below as this is where the big 12+Gram Item will hit right with all those corroded zincs. If I circle a quarter signal and it moves on the Vdi and or grunts at all I ignore it. This way I still find my share of silver jewelry and it seems like every park I go to I find at least one piece of gold.

Its super easy to use but like your mate takes a long time to really get to know.:cheekkiss:
For anyone who is willing to take the time to use these machines as their primary machine and really get to know Vdi's and pinpoint characteristics of different targets its a micro jewelry MONSTER and a very capable coin machine ( listen to the whispers then listen again with pin point) .

Hey Smudge,
As far as the gauntlet goes I'm with you!:starwars:!!
