Fisher Gold Bud (not DP or SE) and Greek series coils.

Paul Postoyan

New member
I've got Fisher Gold Bug with small 5 " DD coil. It's new one.
It isn't PRO or SE version. I think the machine is first modification...
Couple days ago I've ordered 11" DD coil Teknetiss Greek series cos I was told it will work on.....
Is it true?

PS May I recognize when the machine was issued if I have number on box 08112023????

You should have a great time with this combo, Paul. I think it is the best simple machine I have- nearly no learning curve.
It probably is the SE if it doesn't say pro on the face. Yes Greek coils work perfectly. I have a set from my Omega I've used on my plain Jane Gold Bug and all work like they were made for it. You say you bought it new? What does the dealer say? You can call or email Fisher and for mfg. date based on serial number.
Fisher added a bit of needless confusion with their Gold Bug name reuse.

NO, the 'Greek' series coils won't work.

If you have the newer-style Fisher Gold Bug, Gold Bug SE, Gold Bug Pro or Gold Bug DP, they all share the same control housing (like the Teknetics G2) and related circuitry with a few simple changes in the earlier pre-production (final production) Gold Bug and G2 models. If it is in the same housing as the current Gold Bug's and G2, then yes, the 'Greek' series coils will work. You can select from the 11+" elliptical DD, the round 5" DD, or the newer mid-size 5X10DD.

If you have the newer model, then fit on the best coil for you needs and enjoy ..... they work GREAT!

How can I recognize issue?????? On the face Fisher Gold Bug only.......
Is there any 11' DD coil for old issue Fisher Gold Bug?
If Fisher GB can work with others Fisher' DP and SE coils why one will not work with Greek coils????? Other Fisher's GB (DP-SE) works!!!

So far Im not sure what gold bug you even have but the old models (NON DIGITAL) Have a different pin configuration on the coil connector. Any of the digital gold bugs will work with the Greek coils.

If you want to know which version you have. Press and hold the pinpoint button, then power up while still depressing the pinpoint button. You will see displayed 'BUG' and next you see the version number displayed. My detector is version '4'.

Is there such a button combination to get version of the Teknetics G2 please?
I tried this one on the G2 and it does not revel any thing.
Many thanks for your help.

As this forum is dedicated to Gold bug and G2 I dare to ask this question here as I did not find yet anywhere the answer.
I understood that all of you are very familiar with these models since a long time and as I am a beginner it would be great to clarify this point.
I have a teknetics G2 and I would like to use an headphone.
But so many models are on the market with impedance from 8 ohms to 150 ohms and more at all prices, that I am confused.
I would like to know the output audio impedance to buy the suitable headphone.
Few days ago I sent a request to fisher via there web site but it is still without any answer.
Can you please help me on this matter?
It would be so useful to get the answer.
If you know this characteristic may be you also know same thing for the Teknetics T2 as a friend of mine is in the same situation without any answer.
Many thanks to all of you if you help me.
Jackoye
PS: may be this question should have been posted somewhere else but I did not know where.
Sorry for my bad English but i live in France Europe and this language is not my native ones.
But I am fan of G2!

any stereo headphones should work fine :detecting:
i recommend the grey ghosts

jackeye----If I understand your question correctly-----To get/find out the version # on your G2-----first switch to the disc mode (before you turn the machine on)--then push the pin point button in and hold it in while you turn the detector on.-----Continue holding the pin point button in and a version number will come on the screen momentarily.----Mine is a version 4 but if yours shows a version 3---no problem---they are excellent machines also.

Many thanks for your answer.
But in between I got the G2 audio output impedance from Fisher and Teknetics lab.
This device as well as the T2 has 8 ohms output impedance.
This value is also the most usual in audio stereo chains. But such a value is the lowest you will find. (Specially on metal detectors which have any exotic values)
And the grey ghosts head phone has unfortunately the maximal impedance value you can find on the market which means 150 ohms.
This one is specially designed for a detection machine with 150 ohms audio output, and only for equivalent devices.
So the resituated power in this head phone connected on a G2, will be 18 times lower than expected.
All small signals will not be heard in such matching "machine/headphone".
150 divided by 8 egals 18.
No doubt this is basic electronic...
This was the reason why as I am electronic Engineer I needed to know this audio output to buy the best accurate headphone for my machine.
These values are not so often given by constructors and then users can make any mismatch in connecting non adapted headphones.
Expecting that the knowlage of the G2 and T2 values will help some others who will want to make the best matching.
