Fisher F5 Coil

Mezrein

New member
So I have the Fisher F5 which came with the 10" Elliptical coil, and I was wondering if the 11" DD coil would be a better option? I haven't really gotten to use the detector much yet, but I want to maximize my searching potential once I do get going. :)

DD coils separate better and get a very slight edge to depth but sometimes lose a bit on solid vdi locks in some cases.

The 11" DD and 5" DD coils for the F5 enhance it's use. The 5" DD is best in trashy area's.

The rest is as Bart said above. Watch out for the crown bottle caps tho, as these tend to fool the detector when the 11" DD is used.

Read Dave J's post on 11" DD Coils and bottle tops / caps. >>> http://www.findmall.com/read.php?80,1332753 and, yes, I know it's for the Gold Bug Pro, but the info is just as good for the F5 and other detectors that use an 11" DD coil.

I have the 11"DD coil for my F5 and I find it has about 1 to 1 1/2" better depth using a nickel in air tests vs the 10" Elliptical coil. My F5 gain was set at 50 and threshold at -1 when I ran the test.

Thanks for all the info guys. From what I can gather, the swap to 11" really wouldnt be worth it over all, unless I had extra cash laying around. Thanks again folks! :)

Mezrein,
Good headphones first,
then a good electronic pinpointer,
then the 11" DD coil.
then the 5" DD coil,
and a couple of extra lower rods and you'll be kitted up.

Good headphones, check.
I really do want the Garrett pro-pointer.
Coils I understand
But why the lower rods? That so I don't have to remove the coils from the rod and instead just pull out the whole rod when switching coils?

You go ahead and mount your extra coils on lower rods. Then when you need to swap coils, you just unplug from the control box, loosen and slide out the lower rod/coil combo currently on the machine, and slide in, tighten up, do a wrap and plug in and you are ready to swing the new coil.

The rods also make it easier to carry your extra coils into the field. I slide the rod behind the belt of my finds pouch behind my back and let the coil hang over. That way when I need a different size coil I have it with me. Beats walking back to the truck to switch them out. Only problem I have is remembering they are back there when I'm done with a site and am back at the truck taking my pouch off. Sometimes I forget and they drop to the ground when I unbuckle the belt. I got a ding or two on my coils because of that :ranting:

That makes some sense, and totally understand the forgetting they are there. I do that from time to time with my pin-pointer. I generally carry it in my back pocket and forget that its there. Then I get in my rig and hear a slight creaking as I sit against the poor thing. I'm shocked it still works. LOL I don't have a "tool belt" setup quite yet, though I want to get one. Hate having to unclasp my digger and find bags.

Thanks for the info, :) Hopefully I'll get to start swinging soon, I'm itching for it!

Archaeology, I know! Sorry about it, but it is right down the alley of this thread.

But first: Hi! Totally new here, and still in the process of getting my first real deal detector. My late dad bought a "junk" detector way back, and I used it a few times while younger, with quite some success; three cannon balls, 3-4 coins from around 1650 (bronze, heavily corroded) and ofc the usual junk.
However, as I live in Sweden, the laws regarding detecting got tightened up, and thus my interest faded away. But as of late I have a newly spurred interest in detecting, and now have put in for a permit to go hunt some public beaches. Having to get a permit is both a curse and a blessing. Curse since it is a hindrance, a blessing since metal detecting is almost a forgotten art in this country. This means that most public beaches are unspoiled and virgin!

Okay, so now I have begun the process of deciding what to get. And my eyes fall on the F5, since I hate running through menus using buttons. No. I do not own a "smart" phone either...

But now I am facing the difficult choice of choosing the coil. I can get the detector with either the standard coil or the 11" DD, for the same amount of cash. Which one should I choose? I am not interested in getting both, at least not for starters. There will be enough money spent on detector, pinpointer and other odd bits n ends to rule out getting two coils.

Thanks!
