Fisher CZ 3D spec sheet question.....

Ivan

New member
If you go to the Fisher site and click on CZ 3D info.........you can bring up an ad sheet. There is a statement on that sheet, that myself and a good friend of mine are having a friendly disagreement!! It says quote..."The CZ3D will find more GOOD metals such as brass, bronze, copper &silver." My detecting buddy says that the detector has been "dumbed down" in respect to it's gold detection ability. It's a fact...he claims because "gold" is not even mentioned. I somehow just can't agree. Sure it's made to find old coins at older sites but surely they would not make it less sensitive to gold coins....would they?? Now I'm not so sure. Anyone care to chime in on this one? Thanks.

It has not been dumbed down. It has been calibrated for certain older coins to hit as a high tone as opposed to a mid tone ( which would occur on the old analog CZ models).

As far as gold goes...it can hit in any one of the 4 tones the 3D has. Sad to say, in order to find ALL gold you have to dig ALL signals. Small gold coins...I would think the 3D would hit them mostly in the 2 mid tone categories. Bigger gold coins and bigger gold rings may hit as a high tone.

Now, if switched to SALT mode, small gold may be discriminated out since very small gold can be within the salt range of conductivity.

When we are talking about small gold being dropped out in the "Salt" mode.............how small...... is the small gold we are talking about?

Just that when in salt mode, the conductivity range of salt water/wet salt sand is somewhat discriminated out, so any target in that range ( being a gold ring, chain, foil, etc.) will also be discriminated out.

So the question of how small is moot. It does not matter...it's whether or not the target is in that conductivity range. A long gold chain with a very small clasp that would hit in enhanced mode on a 3D (normal on any other CZ), may be discriminated out. I would not say a long gold chain is small gold.

Salt mode helps the CZ run smoother/less falsing/stable when hunting salt water/wet salt sand. There may some salt water beaches where you can run in Enhanced mode, but remember when you ground balance you are essentially discriminating out the ground so again, if a target is in the range of the ground conductivity, it will be discriminated out.

Don't think you can get around not discriminating out targets that have the same conductivity as the ground it self. It's probably a very fine/small range but it is a range and I would imagine there are some targets that fall into that range.

How many times have we read about how many chains/small gold items are missed in the wet salt sand that are probably 1-2 inches down, due to the detector having to be ground balanced to eliminate the salt effects. The detector just does not see them. And you can't run the detector if it picks up the ground as a target.

Not at all dumbed down for gold, but a significant percentage of gold items do hit in the same conductivity range as trash targets.

In enhanced mode the 3d will hit the most widely circulated US gold coin, the half-eagle, in high tone where other cz's and most other tone detectors will not.

It will also pull up some gold from the foil and square tab range into high tone that normally would not hit with a high tone. Conversely, it will also pull some undesired targets into the high tone range.
