Fisher CZ-21 Question

I'm trying to do some trading in the classifieds for a Fisher CZ-21 and have a question or two.
From what I've gathered from spec sheets, it looks like the CZ-3D and the CZ-21 are the same detector except for the enhanced mode on the 3D and the waterproof housing on the 21, is this true? It looks like they even use the same coils. Also, I understand the 21 does well in salt water but what could I expect in a lake or river (I'm in Montana)?

Thanks All
Joe

Joe,
CZ-3D has 4 tone audio ID and the CZ-21 has 3 tone audio ID.

The CZ-21 is essentially a water proof CZ running always in salt mode. It'll do well in fresh water.

I think if I did mainly fresh water, I'd look for a used Tesoro Tiger Shark for the fresh water; or wait for a new one. I understand they are very close to getting back into production with the Tiger Shark.
Cheers,
tvr

P.S. I read Crusty's post about the lake hunt using his CZ-21. He did very well! It is a lot about location.

I use the CZ-21 in fresh water every other day at least in Michigan. LOVE the machine. It is also great in salt water as I have had it in Florida for 3 weeks. I don't think you will find a better machine aside from what people say about the Excab. BUT it is silent and I dive so I can hear boats that come to close. Look down at my post on the underwater park!!

You can't go wrong with the machine.

cz20/cz21 have the same internal componants as a cz5. cz20/cz21 are very good in saltwater. in freshwater they will miss very small gold or have limited depth on very small gold such as wire thin gold rings and smaller items since they are locked in salt mode.

Thanks everyone.
I'm looking to use it mainly in fresh water, both above and below the surface, and in and around ghost towns and old home sights. The ghost towns are often built around gold producing areas so the mineralization can be on the high side at times.
If anyone has any better suggestions I'm certainly open to it. Since I'm not going after any particular objects, the more versatile the better. I'd like to have the option of using it in salt water although the instances of that happening would be few and far between.

Well it looks like I've got a CZ-21 coming! Man am I excited to get out in the water. I've never seen anyone hunting the lakes around here so maybe there's some good stuff out there just waiting for me.
Thanks to everyone for all the input.

Joe

I didn't see your post on using it in ghost town. NOT a good machine for that. You will get too many false signals. I have one with a 10" coil and will never go back to an 8. If targets are close together I just keep fanning and keep taking as I dive.

GOOD LUCK with your new machine. In the water you can't go wrong. I alwasy hipmount it and never use the pinpoint button. Once your good with it you will never have to.

AND never give up. That is the main key.

I know with detectors you can't have it all in just one machine, so I can accept the limitations. Water will be my main focus (especially after seeing your loot) so having a great submersible is more important than than having a good ghost town hunter. Considering all I've used in the past is gold machines, what ever its performance is will be an improvement in discrimination.
And besides, now I'll have an excuse to get another detector:twodetecting:
